I know that there were several members here that predicted an eventual danger to the human food supply during that terrible pet food recall we had.

Well, you were right! It's happened.

FDA: Infant formula from China tainted with chemical
post #2 of 11
There were several infant deaths in China caused by tainted formula prior to the pet food scandal. Obviously next to nothing was done to prevent a repetition.

I wonder why it took so long for them to check these stores products? You think it would be obvious that they could possibly have bad imports.

This same thing happened a few years ago in China as well, milk powder was tainted, making babies either very sick or outright killing them. Sorry, I don't have any facts here. I remember reading about it in the paper, I happened to be in Hong Kong at the time.

At around the same time, there was also a contamination of rice noodles... also in China - surprise, surprise.

Thought I would warn you guys if you are buying baby formula. I saw this on another forum.

These kinds of things will never stop until people make a conscious decision to stop supporting China and buying their goods. They've already proved time and time again that their products can not be trusted and that their standards are horribly unfit. This is just rediculious that now even baby formula is tainted

Thankyou for the warning/link. I hope it prevents more children from becomming ill as a result of this.

Is there a link with direct information on which brands/formulas are under the recall?

It looks like Sanlu is the brand name of the formula that is tainted. http://www.nytimes.com/2008/09/13/wo...ia/13milk.html

I think if the formulas made it to the U.S. they would only be found in ethnic food stores, according to the first article I posted.

You may want to toss your computer out the door then - chances are most of it is made from Chinese parts as with just about everything else around you. Just because something may be assembled in the US doesn't mean the parts are made here.

Maybe? 2% of the stuff in stores are made in the US. It's just a fact of life because consumers want cheaper and cheaper goods.

Our government keeps taking and taking and spending and spending so the average citizen has to spend less on things. If you can afford the luxury, then by all means...

Well, some stuff is still made in Mexico and Korea, among other countries. Though in the last few years I've seen less "Made in Mexico" and a lot more coming from China.

How could China lend us the money to fight wars and bail out corporations like Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac if we didn't buy their products?

They may never have to fire a shot to take us over -- they'll just buy us.
