We have a new leader! Well, let's see how long it lasts. With 20 days left, anything can happen and probably will. Marianjela took over the lead by using noise. The only other winner we had was BelongsToEvie who is back with us and won with food. Words not getting points were sorry, treat, and meow/purr.

Today's KatKwiz was about things that can harm your cat.
If you missed seeing the list, here it is. You may want to print it out.

Had you seen this list before? Could you have ever imagined that there were so many things you had to worry about? Look at number 26, Plants; geez, do you have any of these plants? Honestly, now that you know about this list, do you think you might make any changes in your house? And now for a fun question. Do you know who MMC32879 is and why is she/he able to post a sticky as a Young Cat and why does her/his name not show up in the View Forums Leaders list?

Woo hoo! Thanks for the win Lee; although I have no doubt that Glitch can steal it back from me. I was doing my homework late last night in my sleepless hours, reading through some of the old KatKwerys and found it interesting how she caught up to first place before, over throwing others. SO I have no doubt it can still happen to me too!

Anyway, I'm chiming in late today, just got back from Pittsburgh with Joshua, I'm surprised that no one has answered this yet. Must be my lucky day all the way around!

I have never seen the Hazards List in the Health section here on TCS before. I've seen lists of dangerous items, for example, I know that poinsettias and certain other plants arent healthy for cats and dogs, but just never on heCatSite. I dont venture into that Forum that often, but I am glad to get a refresher course on the subject today!

I do remember seeing a large list of unsafe objects when I seen it on the internet before. I believe I was looking for it in particular to see if one of my houseplants were toxic or not. I'm not aloud to have houseplants now because of the health risk they pose to Joshua's immune system, but before he was diagnosed I tried to have a green thumb but not with much luck. My father was a avid plant-lover. Which is one of the reasons he wasnt a huge cat-lover. He could grow anything! But the cats liked to dig in his plants and use the dirt as a giant kitty litter. Actually when I was younger my mother had an all white cat that got very sick from eating one of his houseplants. A Dieffenbachia, I was pretty young at the time, but remember it well. Mostly I remember how sick this WHITE cat got. It couldnt keep itself clean. I remember my father taking it to the vet before my mother could find out. Turned out to have some kind of kidney failure, and she sadly never did recover.

So the plant list is very extensive, I cant remember all of them, but I do remember a select few because I used to have them. Lily(s), ferns, ivy(s).... and the plants that grow outside! Very scary. We have Azaleas and Hydrangeas all over around here. Just another reason to keep pets indoors.

I know there are a couple foods on that list that shock me: grapes, raisins. avocados! I knew about chocolate... makes ya wonder what it does to us humans huh?

Also antifreeze - I knew this was a big no-no. Ugh... it's a wonder cats are so overpopulated!

So, would I make any changes to my house. Yes! I would never keep a poisonous plant in my house if I thought my cat had a chance of eating the leaves. And I know they are tempted. I wouldnt want that eating on my conscious, knowing that it could completely be avoided.

We had a dog a few years back that got violently ill, my first thought was it got in some poison in the back yard or something. When the vet ran the blood work his white blood count came back REALLY high, somehow the topic of Joshua having cancer came up and the doctor asked me if the dog could have gotten into any of Joshua's pills. There wasnt - but it really made me think.... just the fact that a pill my son takes to save his life can be so poisonous. Yikes.

Anyway, thanks again for the points Lee. I'll be back. I have to go investigate this MMC328709 member.

OK, I think I understand the question better now.

MMC32879, joined the list on the 29th of July 2006. As of this very minute, they have made 85 posts over the years, their last being on the 8th of September. If I remember right, any post can be turned into a sticky, I believe the moderators can turn it into a sticky if they find the information in it important enough.

I believe she joined the list after her cat Misty, aka Goober passed away. I imagine TCS was a great comfort to her when she passed on. Although she hasnt posted a lot, she has been around awhile.

OK, so I checked it out. Sharky, a TCS Advisor, made a request to a Mod to have the thread to be made into a sticky.

I know that a moderator has the power to do so, and I dont know if the post would've been discovered without Sharky pointing it out. But it is a very informative post. I am surprised that Anne didnt already have a blog or page written like this in the Cat Health section.

...or does she?

I had to comment on the plant topic some more. Like chocolate to a dog, I think a lot of the toxicity issue has to do with moderation, or how much they eat.

I know a larger dog can eat a pack of Hershey Kisses and not get sick. But a smaller dog cant metabolize the same amount as easily. But just one kiss isnt likely to harm them.

I'm guessing that a lot is the same with cats and plants. If they don't really consume much plant materia and they just nibble and bite and play with the leaves, they are not likely eating as much.

But if a cat eats a large amount of leaves, he may get a tummy-ache, and feel sick, vomit or even have diarrhea, same thing might happen even if he eats too much kitty grass or cat nip though.

I know I've caught my dogs eating grass only to throw up later.

Even still, it's still safer to avoid poisonous plants, houseplants or outdoor (if your cat is permitted outside) and keep them out of reach of your kitties.

Oh, and i have to tell you - one of the most SHOCKING things I found that is toxic to cats - in my opinion:

apples - or rather the apple seeds!

I dont think that was on the TCS list, but I have seen it in other places.

I think I did see this list when I first joined TCS. However, I'm pretty sure I didn't read all the way through it. I've read several other lists in the past year+ since I got my first kitty, and assumed that it would be similar. There are several things here I don't remember seeing before.

I wonder if "tea leaves" is meant to include all types of tea or only black tea. My kitties LOVE peppermint tea leaves. I can just about guarantee that if I leave the teabag on the counter or in the sink, the next time I go in the kitchen it will be on the floor, ripped open, with two or three cats chowing down. They pretty much leave any other kind of tea leaves alone.

One thing I did NOT see on the list is sharp knives. (Or maybe it was there and I just skimmed past it). Anyway, this is one area where I have changed my habits. Instead of leaving sharp knives out to wash with the rest of the dishes, I wash them immediately after I finish using them. I did quite a bit of reading before I got Shareena, and that was one thing that made a huge impression. Kitties can cut their tongues licking food off sharp knives.

No, my cats are not allowed on the kitchen counters--at least not when I'm watching them. But you know cats, they can tell the second you look away.

yes, i'd seen it before - many of the things on the list i already knew about, tho. i don't have ANY plants [other than herbs] in the house [actually, none of the herbs are currently not there, either!] because i kill everything, so there's not a point to having them! the inclusion on the plant list of 'honeysuckle' kind of surprises me, as there are cat toys made w/honeysuckle - maybe it's a particular part of the plant that's a problem? MMC32879 is not only a young cat - she's evidently a young person, since sending a PM to her isn't an option. her thread became a sticky because sharky asked for it to in post #2.

Ya, I looked at the list. I knew there were some things to be careful of, not that many. I do have dangerous plants, sad to say, but Popsie has never, ever shown an interest in them. I don't know who MMC32879 is, I don't think he/she made it a sticky though. I though a MOD did.

Wahoo! Yay! You waiting to PM me until we're sure this time??
Figured I'd better try to get this done before the last minute this time. Hubby's in with Cronos, so I'm ok!

Glad to see that tie for first is changing! Wonder how many time it'll change before the play offs!

Yes, I did see that list before. Actually, I noticed it when it was first posted, before it was made sticky. And, I had read similar lists elsewhere. I had actually never thought of all those as "worrisome". A lot are just common sense. Though of course, there were a lot on there that I didn't know, so it's very good to read, and always good to refresh on!

Though I do need hubby to read it. He constantly gives Evie more things than he should. We have chins, and they of course LOVE raisins, so he likes to give them to Evie. I keep telling him NO! But he just doesn't think they can be bad for her. Even if they weren't poisonous, I wouldn't want him feeding her random things! If nothing else, it teaches her to beg more.

I don't know if I have any of those plants!
I'm not a plant person. Indoors, I only have... Three plants. Well, two. One is dead and should be thrown away.
The two I have, I don't have a clue what they are! But Evie doesn't eat them, she can't get to them. Well, not without destroying things, which she very well could do any given day. But she hasn't in two years, so I don't expect her to! Nope, I won't be making any changes around the house due to that list. I have things fairly well Evie-proofed.

Nope, don't know who that is! I do know that when that post was made, it wasn't sticky, as that's when I seen it. Then someone, a mod I guess, don't know who, must've made it sticky.

I hadn't seen the list before. Some I knew but a lot surprised me. I don't know what the house plant we have is but I doubt if it is on the list. The girls used to play with the branches and never did get sick. They always left the venus flytrap alone. The only plant they taste now sometimes is the catnip plant.
I didn't know who MMC32879 was but noticed that she wasn't the one who made the post a sticky. Her name doesn't appear in the View Forum Leaders list since she is not a forum leader.

As for the list, I knew antifreeze was bad. Why in heaven would they make that stuff taste sweet to animals? Whoever made it sweet should have their head's examined. My girls never go out so there is no danger there.

Congratulations Marienjela! You are now the top seeded player! Which will make it easier in the long run for me!! The pressure can be off of me for a while so I can get things straightened out at home and at work! Yes I have seen this list before! I do not have any plants at my house because I dont have a green thumb, no gardening skills what so ever. I dont think I'll make any changes to my house because none of those things are a worry at my house! Ive always animal and children proofed my house so such things couldn't get at my babies! I do not know who that is but I would think it would be someone who is running an expert forum right now who Ive not seen, and Ive not seen the expert forum because I have no time at all to be online! I think if you make an important topic or thread that the mods will make it a sticky, Im not sure though and Im really not looking for words tonight because I know I wont get any. I can obviously tell that they're all taken. Maybe they're not in the leaderboard. I think Im not on there, and if I am Im so far back that its unbelievable, and maybe they're no longer a member here or something. Things that are important are usually made into stickies and there are several threads that weren't started by mods that were turned into stickies later on. Just depends on if its valuable information. I havn't checked the thread nor the sticky and I dont know really. I dont have any idea if Ill have time to be on the next few days so everyone have a good time winning, my luck isn't so lucky right now so I dont even feel like really making the effort to come on once a day and post when theres already a great number of people posted ahead of me, even though I know that in the past I have come in and posted last and still managed to use a secret word, normally due to the fact that someone used a whole bunch and only one counts or something. Although if you use more than one dont you still get credit in the points thing just not get the points?? I dont know... Im tired, Im off to bed! Enjoy your win!

Remember this, and take it to bed with you: Whoever ends up on top at 23:59:59 GMT September 30 does not win a single point. Not yet. And they do not win a specially designed logo defining them as the 2008 KatKwery champion. Nope, not yet. And there are still from six to nine games left to play. THE PLAYOFFS!

If you are any where near the top eight players in points, you still may be in the playoffs. For example, if you are currently say, eleventh. If 3 players above you in points could not play for whatever reason, you would have the option of being in the playoffs. Please PM me by the 28th if you are anywhere in the top twelve and cannot play. Here are the dates:

October 2, 3, and 4 (if needed) 4 games each day
October 6, 7, and 8 (if needed) 2 games each day
October 10, 11, 12 (if needed) 1 game each day

Different from the regular season, everybody will know the exact times of the postings and nobody will have an advantage being the first to answer.

I will have all 90 questions made up before the 28th.
The secret words will be picked the day of the contest, as before.
Therefore, absentee playing will be allowed. We already know that marianjela will be missing on some of those dates so she will be PM'd the questions and she will PM me her replies. I will post her replies on the day of the contest just as though she were not away. So, nobody has to miss out on being in the playoffs thanks to Persi's quick thinking in this department.
