I was just petting my 7 month old kitten and felt a foreign material under her skin around near her back bone.
It is about 1/4 of an inch long and narrow. I asked a friend and they said it could be her microchip moving along the back.

Has this happened to anyone and should I be concerned about it?
Thanks for your help.

It's very possible that the microchip is moving around. You could take her to the Vet and have them run the wand over her body to see where the mc is.

A problem with having the mc move around is that if she went missing, you'd worry that a person with the wand wouldn't scan her body enough to find the mc, and therefore assume that she doesn't have one.

I don't know how one keeps the mc from moving around.

At the shelter we always scan the whole body, as the chips can move.
