Tomorrow I will be teaching for the first time. I am leading a seminar at the university on methodology in history. The prof gave us instructions about what we should do with our students and it's all fairly simple (a round of introductions, going over the course plan and then discuss the very short reading the students were supposed to do) but I'm still nervous. I don't know how to teach!

Could anyone send me some "don't screw up too bad" vibes?

You'll do just fine! You do know how to teach. That's what you went to school to do, isn't it? So you do know how. Go in with confidence, and even if you don't feel like you know what you are doing, pretend that you do. It sets up the hierarchy with you being at the top of the pecking order in the classroom

Thanks!

I woke up this morning and really didn't want to get out of bed! (it doesn't help that I went to the gym yesterday for the first time in years and I feel like I have been run over by a truck
). I'm sure it will go ok. I am just not sure what to do when I cover this week's reading... I could either just point out the most important points or try to get a discussion going. A discussion would probably be best but the reading doesn't really land itself to that... it's a reading about how to prepare to write an essay.
Well, I'll see how much time we have left at the end for that.

Things went fine, for the most part.

In the first seminar this morning, I was wondering why everyone was so late for the 10am class, but at 10:10 I decided it was time to start. Lots of people came in late but I was able to cover everything. At the end, people finally pointed out to me that the class was supposed to start at 10:15

The second seminar went better.

In total, I had about 30 students today, and only two of them had done the reading for today's class. Apparently most people were not aware they had to read something for today. So the discussion for the reading was really just me summarizing what the text said.

But thanks everyone for the vibes. I think they worked

You should have told them your watch was fast - and hoped that no one pointed out you weren't wearing one if you don't.
