I was thinking today as I was going thru my 7th bag of cat food - where do you guys purchase your food???

Ive been getting it at walmart - 20lbs for $10. Is that the best option price wise?? I want the cats to get the best nutrition - but i wont be able to afford it especially during the winter months here.

How about any stores that MAY give discounts for feral cat feeding? I asked petsmart and got a long winded response which Im guessing meant "no".

thanks

You do not mention what kind of cat food you have been buying.

one aspect is also, do the homeless you talk about do they some hunting?

If yes, they get some nutrition this way, and tolerate better a cat food which isnt especielly good. This is why many farmer-cats do manage reasonably well, although these farmers buys cheap third-rate food....
As Mices and such IS good cat-food, very high in animal proteins and fats...

If they dont hunt, their need for decent cat-food is relatively greater - EVEN if they manage to get some food from, say, wastes.

In Sweden, I would say 65 swedish kronas for almost 10 kilogrammes is cheap, really cheap. So I suspect your WalMart price is also good - or the cat food a cheap one.

Observe, cheap isnt necessary equivalent with bad. There ARE quite decent cheap cat foods.
Look at how much animal proteins and fats there is - the two most important questions. And not too much plants - especielly not cereals. Vegetables are thus better then cereals.
In dry food proteins should be 30+ percent, fat 15-22 percent, both preferably mostly from animals.
Some fish in is usually OK, but not too much!!!!

Dog food can be really cheap. But dog food isnt no good in the long run for cats. Main reason there is too little taurin, which cats needs but not dogs.
So you can give a homeless cat good dog food now and then, but NOT as its main food. Unless this homeless do hunt mices and the like...

Edit.
(fresh meat contains naturally taurin. But that taurin gets partly destroyed when the meat is processed. This is why it is necessary to give additional taurin in processed cat food. But cats who do eat much natural fresh or frozen meat, doesnt need extra taurin)
