And that's one thing that DOESN'T scare me. When you come down to it, the President has so little power that what he does really has little influence on our daily lives. I am NOT afraid of riots in the streets, tanks on every corner, etc. That's just now how it works here.

But we ARE discussing irrational fears, and, by definition, those are fears that are not affected by our conscious reasoning.

After all, going back to the first post, I really knew there was no one else in the house; I just couldn't convince myself.

Since I'm leaving the country, this election doesn't concern me, but I'll be afraid for my family if McCain is elected. What? The last 8 years weren't enough? IMHO

I must have SUCKER drawn on my forehead!
That is so sweet, mom and I used to do the same thing when I was little. Well, not to stop bad dreams, but to let the sandman know where he needed to sprinkle the sleeping dust. After I got older, we started "drawing" on each other backs (mom LOVED having her back scratched) so we would draw pictures on each other's backs and the "scratchee" would have to guess what it was. If they guessed right, they had to scratch the other persons back. Someone, mom never could figure out what I was drawing so I would have to scratch her back for hours....hmmm....

I'm scared of stoopid people.

I'm scared to get water in my face, no clue why, always been that way.
I mean, I wash my face, but I'm just a freak about it.

I have come across that "fear of face in the water" many times on cruises, when we go on a snorkeling tour. Some people just freak.

Snakes--I have a phobia about snakes. I can't even bear to look at a picture of one or watch one on tv. DH has finally figured out if there's a snake on tv change the channel--quickly!

Drowning, which may be why I'm afraid of crossing bridges. It's not the water that scares me, but what could happen in the water---like drowning

I'm afraid to look into a mirror in the dark; you just never know what you might see in there.

Also afraid of heights; in the past I've forced myself to climb a ladder to work on a first story roof a couple of times. When it's time to climb back down it may take me 20 minutes to work up the courage to put my foot on that ladder. I've gotten to the point I don't bother to get the ladder out anymore.

And silly as it may sound, I'm afraid of choking. If you watch "30 Rock" you might have seen a joke that women who live along are afraid of choking to death cause there's no one there to do the Heimlich manuever on them. Ok, I don't live alone but it still scares me.

And last, but certainly not least, I'm afraid to watch "The Exorcist". Won't even watch the edited for tv version. It totally creeps me out.

Geez, I didn't realize I was such a wuss!

I have a massive fear of Bees/wasps/flying buzzing stinging things. I cant do anything about it, I just freeze....I swear my heart stops beating and everything...and there is no reason for this. As far as I recall, I have never been stung by anything so who knows what is up with that...
I used to have big fears of needles and lightning, but I got over these by forced exposure (by donating blood with the needles, I could not convince myself my fear was worth more than someone's life)
My other biggest fear (sorry for those of you down under!) is Australia. Every time I hear about a deadly snake, deadly spider, deadly coral, deadly sea creatures etc., its coming out of Australia. I keep imagining myself stranded in the outback, surrounded by lizards snakes and giant insects....yea, Im pretty sure ill never visit there

I'm amazed at how many people are afraid of spiders! If I see one in the house I'll pick it up in a kleenex and take it outside so the cats or DD don't kill it. One of my brothers is the same way.

Wow, lots of water/drowning fears. Lots of snakes. Lots of bugs/spiders. But no mice?? I am PARANOID of mice. I can't watch them on TV. I can't be in the same room with pet mice. I can't even see a picture of them. I was at a friend's house last week and he wanted to show off his new pet. He pulls out a baby white mouse and lets it run around the table while he played with it. It was all I could do to keep from grabbing the cast iron skillet on his stove and WHACKING THE &%( out of it! Either that or running from the room tearing my hair out.

I am also afraid of drowning. I can take a shower and get water on my face, but I can't go under water in a pool. I think I drowned in a past life.

My only real fear: anything involved with water that is over my head.

I've done my best to break that fear. I actually went on a rubber raft over a waterfall once, jumped out of a boat into the middle of the Pacific Ocean, and swam with 12 foot barracuda's. The fear hasn't left me in spite of these things.

I'm scared of Heights, spiders, and confined spaces.

I have a awful fear of Semi trucks on the highway in the winter time. In a snow storm a few years ago a big semi truck was traveling way to fast for road conditions and he came right up on the back end of my truck. All I could see was the big grill in my rear view mirror. Interstate 80 was down to one lane. This guy would not let up and my truck wound up spinning out into the bar ditch across center lane. The guy did not even tap his brakes after he did that. To this day I have a fear of Semi trucks. I have to travel 40 miles one way on I-80 to work and have seen many semi's that have wiped out when the weather is bad. I will call into to work if the road conditions are calling for extreme caution. Not because of fear of snow and ice but because of my fear of the semi trucks. Everytime there is a snow storm there is a semi that has wiped out on this stretch of the highway!

Wow! I can understand why you are afraid of them now! I HATE Semi's but I haven't had the kind of experience you had. I don't think that is irrational at all!

I'm ok with spiders and snakes (DON'T like them in my house though!), but I freak out completely if I see a centipede! I HATE those things! They just look like running fur balls, and the raise up on their hind legs when you try to kill them. That's just not right. My personal hell would be being trapped in a room filled with them. I have nightmares about that.

I don't really have a fear of water...I have a fear of things that are UNDER the water. Going over a bridge doesn't bother me...unless it has pillars that just disappear. I took up Scuba diving so I have seen what is under the water but I still can't walk into the ocean or a lake without a mask and air tank.

The older I get the more fear seems to emerge! I fear being alone, growing old alone, and with no insurance, or retirement! I fear the next death in my family, only because I know what grief is now!!! I have always had the fear of being buried alive, or put in my trunk of my car, by force! Oh and since I was young, we used to go down to Caddo River to water ski, there were
several slues that you could follow off the river, that would take you out to
the big lake. One was called "government ditch" which was probably about a
mile long, it was a narrow water way, with moss trees that grew over it forming a canopy so to speak! everytime my dad took us down the ditch in the boat, I would get the chills, and I would think and sometimes say aloud, I would die if I ever had to swim in the ditch! That was a tremendous fear of mine.....until finally one late summer day about 12 yrs ago, one of my good friends was getting married, another friend of ours had a lakehouse down on the river, when I arrived, it was about 5 pm. they had had some drinks and wanted to go ride the wave runner, well I hadn't had anything to drink, so I said I would take them for a ride! This wave runner was ex large, it held 4 of us, and off we went down the river, and back and then we came to the little bridge that you went under and were then in the government ditch, so I decided to go down the ditch, everything was fine and we made it to the big lake, (the big lake was being taken over with moss, which meant that about 5 inches from the surface was nothing but moss, to the bottom! Well whenever I was going to turn around, moss got sucked up in the jet of the wave runner! and it died.....well I didn't get it out of my mouth quick enough to say "Don't lean......and there we went turned over into the moss filled lake!
OMG!!!OMG!! I get anxiety just typing this........well we were about a 1/2 mile from anything, and there weren't any people on the lake being the end of August, so we made the decision to swim back to the ditch!!! Oh and you had to go through alligator bayou to get to the ditch! thank goodness we all had life jackets on! but swimming in the moss was torcher enough! then to think I had to swim the alligator bayou and then the ditch! we got to the bayou, and we could stand up the water was that low! one friend was screaming "we're gonna die!!" over and over! we were swimming in the water for 4 hrs. and nobody came by. we finally made it to the ditch and I was about to die!! But I didn't! I had made it through one of my worst fears! It didn't make the fear go away though cause I would never want to be swimming in that part of that lake again! I still fear that!!!!! sorry that was lengthy! anyway I do have more but I'll spare everyone!!

Construction sites.

We've had so many construction accidents in NYC lately - huge sites with huge cranes that come tumbling down on the streets - and there are so many of these huge sites in the city right now. I will walk out of my way to avoid walking under these monsters. I keep visualizing them breaking and falling down - because it happens!!!

Helicopters. This is an irrational fear. I go biking on a bike path we have along the Hudson River. Part of it goes by a helicopter landing pad. If I see one taking off or coming in for a landing, while I'm biking, I wait until they've either landed or have cleared the lot and are way in the air, over the Hudson, before I ride by. I'm afraid they'll crash on landing or takeoff, and those big blades will fly off and come flying through the air and behead people.
Crazy, I know, but it almost makes me nauseous thinking about it.

And Sarah Palin scares the crap out of me.
