1) Small spaces
2) Heights
3) Flying
4) Bugs

And my most irrational fear.....little dogs.

I used to be scared to touch them at the shelter, but give me a 100 # Rott, Dane, or Saint any day!
And now I am owned by a halfpint.

My biggest fear in the entire world is spiders
Followed very closely by any and all bugs (except lady bugs) and lizzards. I'm not only afraid of them alive - I'm also afraid of their carcasses. If I see a bug or creepy crawley in a room I will not go back in the room until it's dead and the carcass has been removed and disposed of (much to the dismay of DBF - he's terrific though and has saved me many times).

When I was small child I used to watch a show called Land of the Lost. There were sleestacks in there that were these weird lizzard men with lasers. I was terrified that they were in my room just waiting for me to fall asleep - then attack. My father had to do a sleestack check every night and then he would sit in the door of my room until I fell asleep. He's such a great Dad

I have a picture of a sleestack that I am trying to attach so that you can see how terrifying they might be to a 5 year old. I can't figure it out so you'll just have to believe me on this one

Aw, that is so cute. When my daughter was little for some reason she was afraid of bears. So I got a can of Glade and told her it was "bearspray" and sprayed it every night!

Now if someone could only invent "plane crashing with me in it" spray for me, LOL.

now, see, that's always been my preferred method of dying - quickly over, no lingering...

I think the strangest fear that I have encountered is one of the girls that works with me has what's called a tactile texture disorder. She is terrified by anything that has a powder texture, flour, talc, chalk. It has to be smooth though coarse stuff like salt or sugar doesn't bother her..

She has conditioned herself to deal with it over the years but still cringes at the thought of touching anything powdery..

SPIDERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I hang all my clothes in the closet inside out and all my stuff is folded in my dresser drawers the same way. That way I can inspect them inside and out before I put them on.

Also water. I can not swim and have no desire to. I have to wash my face with a wash cloth before I get in the shower because there is no way I can let water flow on my face....no way!

My top one would have to be spiders. I literally feel like vomiting and start to panic attack at even the tiniest one. Next would be the dark I will go through the apartment and turn on lights as I go, I also have multiple night lights as well the closet door and bedroom door must be shut at night. The lesser fear would be prolly natural disasters home catching on fire, tornado, plane crash. When I was little I used to have terrible nightmares about these things on a regular basis. It's not so bad now but I do have them on occasion.

I've got Asperger's syndrome and part of it is a strong aversion to some textures, though I wouldn't say I'm afraid of them. There are some types of paper I can't stand, and the texture of some microfibers makes me feel sick. And I just hate the feeling of soap on dry skin.

As far as real fears go, I'm afraid that the human population will keep growing and we just won't get it. That one pales my other fears.

Kim, this reminds me of when my oldest daughter was about 4 or so. She used to have nightmares, and was afraid to go to bed at night. So we started giving her "nightmare" pills (which were nothing more than chewable vitamins) and I would draw dreams on her forehead before she fell asleep. To this day she still asks me to "draw" on her forehead every now and again. In fact the dream drawing thing kind of morphed into a bedtime ritual for all the kids. Joshua likes for me to draw the dreams on his back

I must have SUCKER drawn on my forehead!

I'm terrified of grasshoppers.
Don't know where it came from either because as a kid I was fine with them.

I HATE ninja spiders and am afraid of them! I'm also afraid of water, lakes, rivers, oceans, mushrooms (well, I don't like touching them), darkness, tornadoes, and fire.
I also have nightmares of plane crashes and/or September 11 on a regular basis. My plane crash fear isn't too silly though - I live beside a military base, and in 2005 I was the unfortunate witness to a fatal mid air crash between two biplanes.

I have some basic fears but with explanations....

Heights-the reason I can't do really high roller coasters. I don't mind the ride itself, it's just when they go up and up and up...Those freefall type coasters, I like the fall, I just don't like the time it takes to get up there.

It was worse when I was younger.

Weeds that grow in the water-When I was younger, I was deathly afraid of those weeds that grow in the water of lakes and rivers. I think it was that I thought "something" was going to grab me. That is what kept me from waterskiing till I was older.

I still don't like swimming around it. But I can deal with it now.

SPIDERS and other creepy crawlies-aahhhhhhh! Keep those things away from me. I worked the nature/outdoors program at camp and had to deal with these things. Tarantulas(had to wear a glove), scorpions(no way) and millipedes(tried it once, ugh)

HOWEVER, I had absolutely no problem handling the large snakes, even after being bitten a few times, and the water monitors.

When my wife and I used to haul explosives, people would say, "Aren't you afraid of that? One spark and you'll never know what hit you!"

We said, "I thought that's how everyone wants to die!"

As to airplanes, you are safer on the airplane (at least on an American-owned airline) than you are in the car going to the airport. And as for cruise ships on the ocean, you are safer on one of them than home in your own bed. Only one passenger fatality (due to a problem on the ship, not suicides, falls, jumpers, etc.) in the last 25 years on a ship sailing from American ports, and that one was a heart attack due to a fire.
