Hi. On wednesday morning I woke up and my cat had thrown up white/yellow bile. I thought it would pass but by wednesday night his condition grew worse. He just layed there, staring at nothing. He'd keep throwing up. Wouldn't eat or drinking. When he'd go to the bathroom it was just like..mucousy diarrhea. He'd cry when I picked him up. On thursday I called the his vet but he wasn't in. I decided to take him to a different vet because it was an emergency. She ran a blood test and said that he had toxins in his liver or something, his stress level was high, and his white blood cells were extremely low. I told her do whatever you can for him, money is not a problem, just make him okay. She ended giving him fluids on the under the skin and a shot of antibiotic. She sent us home with some medicine that would make him stop vomiting and told me to force feed him baby food. I fed him baby food but he hated it. He ended up throwing it up. Four hours after we left the vet Tobie died. I'm distraught and want to know what was wrong with him? Do you have an idea?

Without an autopsy its hard to tell, but it sounds like something related to his liver. It could also be some kind of poison he got into - was he an outside cat?

I'm sorry for your loss. But know that he's happy and peaceful now, free of any pain.

If toxins were involved I would say that his liver may have been damaged or failing. I am so sorry for the loss of your cat and can relate with you in more than one way. It is NOT easy to deal with and I can't really offer you a definite answer.

If it is any comfort to you, I know it may not be much, but at least he wasn't home alone when he passed.

So sorry about your cat.
I lost my Stormy last Dec even though we rushed her to the vet.
She threw up yellow and was drooling and it turned out her kidneys were gone so I had t make the hard choice the next day.
I wonder why the vet didnt keep your cat there.

Thank you for the kind words!

He was 1 and he was an indoor cat. Before wednesday I thought he was PERFECTLY fine. It all happened so fast. I wish the vet would've told me more.

oh my! I am so so sorry, it definitely sounds like liver failure, and with cats that can come on VERY fast and be VERY severe. Many things can bring on liver failure. Your kitty is peaceful now and waiting for you.....

My thoughts and prayers to you.....

I am so sorry. The vet should not have told you that he would be okay, as your kitty was obviously very sick.

All I can think of is perhaps he got into something that was poisonous. Maybe you could look outside to see if there is anything around that he could have eaten. There is a list of poisionous plants and household items, etc. in this thread: http://www.thecatsite.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=174854

I guess the only way to know for sure is an autopsy. Did you call the vet and ask what it could have been? Again, I'm so sorry!
I'm sure he is at the rainbow bridge now though and free of any pain.

In July and August, you were posting about using over-the-counter flea remedies on some cats.

Was this cat exposed to these?

So very sorry about your loss. I don't know if it helps much knowing that you are not alone and we all share in this pain.

I too lost a beloved dog to liver failure. The vet did not know the cause but there were several speculations. It happen so very quickly. They asked me about toxins. She was an inside dog and was supervised when out. They mentioned rat poison, liver disease, and a reaction to her annual vaccines.

I am so sorry.

I've lost 2 cats to over-the-counter flea and tick medicines. I think that stuff is too strong for cats, especially if he was just one year old.

Poor little fellow.
But you will see each other again at the Bridge and he will be as happy and healthy as ever! Lots of
and peace during this difficult time!

My heart goes out to you. I am so sorry for your loss. I know the pain of a sudden death of a cat with no real explanation. It's very hard.

Again, I am so sorry for your pain.
