After eleven years as my mom's faithful companion, and the being who got her through my father's stroke, his subsequent disabilities, and his death, Kano has crossed the bridge, aged 12 - 13.
Kano became a family member when my sister spotted him as an overgrown pup in a shelter, and took him home. He accompanied my youngest nephew to my parents' house every weekday when they were babysitting, and one day just decided to stay there.
He was my mother's baby from day one, and a funny, affectionate dog. He fancied himself a watchdog, and would growl if somebody strange walked down "his" street, but would then try to lick anybody he met to death. He was never loud. If he wanted something, he would put a paw on your knee and gaze into your eyes, or do a funny little dance to get your attention.
Whenever I visited in August, he'd decide to give his mommy a vacation, and I became chief cook and door opener. He didn't appreciate the baths, vet visits, pills, ear cleanings, etc., he got during my recent visits, but that didn't stop him from sneaking up into bed with me or dispensing sloppy kisses.
My mom and the rest of the family are heartbroken.
Here he is trying to avoid my camera (he was very camera-shy, not to mention gun-shy and terrified of thunder):
In one of his favorite positions:
Chilling out on the sofa with his "sister" and best friend, Cheyenne:
We loved you, big boy, and are all going to miss you terribly. Play happily across the Rainbow Bridge with Shadow, Ginger, and Sienna, and watch over your mommy, Cheyenne and Rufus.
