So an evening or two ago, my boyfriend and I were driving home when we noticed a bunny crouched at the side of the road. People kept stopping to look at it, so we did too, and it was still very much alive and obviously had been hit by a car.

I think it's pelvis was shattered, and there was a gash (strangely not bloody) on its leg. In spite of everyone stopping to gawk, it just sat there, eyes half shut, breathing.

So we made the decision to bring him to the 24 hour emergency vet and have him euthanized... When cars drove by it tried to hop away, but it ended up just flopping around on the ground.. It didn't even struggle or try to get away when we picked him up with a towel and put him in the box to carry him.

Ugh.. I think I made the right decision. I think it was better than being hit by a car or eaten by one of the many raccoons around there, but.. I don't know. I tried to imagine being the bunny and just broke down. -.- It was not a fun night.

I believe you made the right decision. Years ago my mom ran over a baby rabbit with a hay bailer(sp?) The baby bunny lost both front paws...Mom brought it home and her and I wrapped its little paws and made it comfortable for the night(no emergency vet here at the time) the next day we took the bunny to the vet and had him PTS it was hard but it was the best thing for the little guy!

I also think you made the right decision. Things about animals are very important to me and I remember being a boy of about 7 and I stepped on one of the baby chicks roaming in our back yard and well, squashed it. It was already dead so I had no decision to make and that bothered me so much growing up as a teen. Then I got my own car and drove from Seattle to San Diego through deer country. Well, I hit a deer on a curve and could see how much pain it was in, thrashing about and then I did something I never thought I would be able to do, I went to my car and got my Swiss army pocket knife and I slit his throat, ending his suffering.

This is forty years later and I cannot help but to think about that night. There was no way that deer was going to survive and I ended who knows much time of suffering before I killed him. I think about that night from time to time and I know I did the right thing but it was the hardest decision I have ever made.

Yes, you did the right thing.
Both of you did.

I think is a compassionate humane thing to do. Even knowing that I am sure it was still tough.

Bless you for ending that poor bunny's suffering. Some people would have just left it there and said "oh poor thing", but you did the kindest thing. Know that in your heart.
