My Ragdoll was having constant loose stools, and after trying a few different things, my vet & I switched him to the Royal Canin Green Peas & Rabbit veterinary diet to see if the loose stools were related to what he was eating (He was eating Chicken Soup). Well, it worked. He's been on the new food for maybe 2 months now, and is doing great on it.

However, it's SO expensive! For 8lbs., it's $35. 8lbs. is the biggest bag you can get as well. So I was wondering if anyone knew of a food that was similar to this one, but somewhat cheaper? It's also a perscription only diet, which is fine, but I'd love to be able to buy it when I go to the store for my other cats.

Here's a list of the ingredients:

Ground peas, rabbit meal, rabbit, pea protein, canola oil, rabbit digest, calcium sulfate, dicalcium phosphate, salmon oil, DL-methionine, choline chloride, sodium chloride, L-lysine, potassium citrate, phosphoric acid, vitamins [DL-alpha-tocopherol (source of vitamin E), L-ascorbyl-2-polyphosphate (source of vitamin C), niacin, inositol, vitamin A supplement, thiamine mononitrate (vitamin B1), D-calcium pantothenate, pyridoxine hydrochloride (vitamin B6), riboflavin (vitamin B2), menadione sodium bisulfite complex (source of vitamin K activity), beta-carotene, vitamin D3 supplement, folic acid, biotin, vitamin B12 supplement], minerals [zinc proteinate, ferrous sulfate, zinc oxide, iron proteinate, copper sulfate, copper proteinate, manganese proteinate, manganous oxide, calcium iodate, sodium selenite], taurine, preserved with natural mixed tocopherols, rosemary extract, and citric acid.

Guaranteed Analysis %:
Crude Protein (min) 30
Crude Fat (min) 11
Moisture (max) 10
Crude Fiber (max) 7

And a link to the food:

If I can't find anything, obviously I'll just keep feeding him this since it agrees with him. If anyone has any suggestions, that'd be great.

Try the Natural Balance limited ingredient diets. They're non-prescription and when my cat was on an allergy trial, my vet said they were virtually identical to prescription allergy diets. My cat also found Natural Balance very tasty, and he did well on it.

They come in either Green Pea & Duck, or Green Pea & Venison.

Ok thanks, I'll look into that.

We decided to start with the Rabbit & Pea because the food he was on had chicken in it, so we stayed away from 'bird' ingredients for the trial. But maybe it was the chicken that bothered him, and he'd be fine on duck or something.

Wet food doesn't seem to agree with him. I've tried all different kinds of Wellness and Nutro, and he always gets loose stools from it, so I completely eliminated it from his diet.

Remember to talk with your vet about what you found

I too have a Ragdoll with loose stools several times a week. Did you continue with the Rabbit & Pea or did you find something else that worked too? Could you please email me & let me know. Thanks so much!

Thank you,

My cats are on this food but I've been trying to switch them to something better. Unfortunately they are picky plus the allergies...

To tell you the truth I'm not at all sure what to stay away from. I have 3 Ragdolls and only 1 seems to have loose stools several times a week. They are currently eating Royal Canin for sensitive Stomach but it's not helping. I've tried Natures Variety, Wet & Dry, Wellness, & Blue Buffalo. She has been to the Vet and everything checks out okay. So not sure what to try. They have ate Chicken, Salmon, Turkey. They hate Natures Variety Vension. They all love wet food but that seems to make her go quickly and she has long hair so it's a terrible clean up job! Thanks, Lisa

@lisareier - It sounds like a food sensitivity, possibly IBD to me. I would try a novel protein, very limited ingredient wet only diet. Avoid all grains, veggies and fish which are common allergens for cats. Try something like duck, quail, lamb, or rabbit, something she's never had before. Also raw food has been known to help many IBD kitties. There are many commercial raw options these days if you don't want to go the home-made route.

The internal med specialist vet recommended the Natures Variety Instinct canned for my cat with IBD . and that helped but the raw helped even more.

So you don't think all wet diet will add to her problems? I am going to go with a limited ingredient and she how that plays out. Thanks for the info & tips. I will certainly try it!

An all wet diet will be the best thing for her, other than raw. It is closer to what they would eat in the wild.

You could try the RC Hypoallergenic in canned. It's very similar to the dry you described. I prefer the Nature's Variety Instinct but I understand where you're at. You've tired of cleaning up after accidents.
