It's been a completely crazy morning.

DH and I were awakened at about 4 am by the sound of Forest running around like crazy in the living room. Forest has cerebellar hyperplasia so when he runs around it sounds like a herd of about 30 cats, but this sounded different than when he's playing with a toy or something. DH got up to investigate and when he looked over the landing something BIG went whizzing by his head. After getting our glasses and some lights on we could see that it was a bat. Both cats were going NUTS...they figured this was the best toy ever. I was able to get the window in our front door open and after a few passes, the bat flew out the window unharmed...much to the dismay of Tailer and Forest.

That would have been enough for one morning, but it got even more interesting. DH and I were having coffee and talking in front of the picture window when I noticed a bird fly out of a tree and land in the middle of the busy street in front of our house. A second later, a car came and it looked like the bird was hit. I was pretty upset having witnessed that, but a moment later it looked like the bird was still moving. So DH got dressed and went out to investigate for me and either move it out of the street or, if necessary, end its suffering. When he went to investigate he found that it was a parakeet! And it appeared to be unharmed! DH stopped traffic and picked up the poor little thing and we dug out the bird cage from the garage. We hung him up in the basement well out of the reach of the cats. He's exhausted and terrified, but he's perked up some since this morning. I gave him some seed and he's started chowing down so he's pretty hungry, too. We called the police but nobody reported the little guy missing. It appears we have a new pet parakeet.

So we've had a lost kitten, a bat, and a parakeet all in the last week! We're convinced it must be some kind of crazy sign. DH complained that it seems we're destined to have a third pet. I told him to cheer up...it could have been the bat!

No name yet. I don't know if it's a boy or a girl. DH has come up with some pretty bad suggestions, though.

That's good news you have given the parakeet a new home!

What were your husbands' suggestions for names? Just out of curiosity...

This might help you determine the poor bird's gender, only works though if the bird is mature.
Sexing budgies

Glad your new pet isn't the bat

I've had budgies all my life and we have two now, obviously. Whitey Ford, the white English budgie, is definitely a male but his cere is pink because he is white. If your new pet is blue or green, the cere identification will work.

While I can't tell you how old the bird is, I can how how to identify baby birds. If there are stripes on its forehead, it is a baby bird. If the forehead is a solid color, it is older than a baby.

For names, you might want to consider a name that is easy for a budgie to say, like Sweetie, Tweetie, Petie, etc. And a Sweetie or a Tweetie can be either sex.

You new pet is fully-flighted because it escaped. If you have any ideas about letting it fly free some or all of the time, then do not clip the wings because the budgie would be lunch.

For training you new addition, work on getting the bird on your finger and talking at the same time. Put your finger in the cage slowly, and bring it closer to the bird day by day. When you can get the finger right up to the bird, press your finger below the chest using an upward motion, saying step up. Stepping up is an instinctive behavior when you press up like that.

For talking, start with one phrase and repeat it over and over and over again in 5-minute training sessions, maybe 3 ,4,5 times a day and whenever you say hello to the budgie. Start with pretty birdie. If a bird masters that, then you have a talker.

Oh! forget. If the bird is a female chances are very good that she won't talk.

PM me anytime.
Rosemary

PS - bats can't talk people talk.

Thanks so much, Rosemary! His or her forehead is definitely striped, so it's a baby. I thought he/she looked pretty small. So I guess we'll need a gender-neutral name. Of course, the fact that it's a baby makes the whole situation even more sad. I'm just glad we got him/her before the traffic did.

We definitely won't be clipping its wings. I hope to be able to let it out at least some of the time...it would be a pretty boring life for the birdie if it were in the cage all the time. Besides, even if it got out accidentally I'd want it to be able to escape from Tailer if it needed to.

We had a cockatiel a few years ago. It wasn't a budgie, but I gather that the recommended diet and care shouldn't be all that different.

The names DH has recommended to date have included Road Kill, Street Pizza, Michellin, Goodyear, and Uniroyal. I'd be really mad at him if it weren't for the fact that he saved it in the first place.

lol if he really wants to name it a tire name, call it Pirelli, at least that's class

I was thinking Speedbump myself, then you could just call it Speedy.

Speedy is a great name! Something a bird can say applicable to both sexes.

You will not really be able to tell the sex of a baby bird unless you are an expert.

For the cage, consider getting a new one. For food, try to get him/her on pellet food. Good luck. My budgies hated it.
Do not buy Hartz. Get a good mix from a bird store even if it is not only pellets but has seed in it.

Great idea to let Speedy fly free for part of the day. Exercise is great for a bird. And definitely don't clip those wings,

Take Speedy to a vet, one is an avian vet but will also take care of cats and dogs. Your vet will tell you how to deal with a budgie. The right vet will give Speedy a good check up and may be able to tell you the sex. Make sure the vet weighs Speedy. The scale looks like a covered colander on a a scale. It is a basis for the health of a budgie.

Some "expets" say to not give the bird a mirror if you want it to talk. Never had that problem. Like I said, repeat that phrase and over and over again.

Buy a new cage and make sure that you buy a swing. Look for natural products except for the bath. They are plastic with a mirror on the bottom. Maybe the little bird will like to shower with youl

Start training and talking now.
And make sure you don't call the bird a parakeet. Budgie is the correct term and is easy to say.

See if you can train your budgie to sit on your shoulder. Then you can take your budgie with you and the cats can't reach it.

I actually had great luck converting seed junkies to pellets using Zupreem fruit blend mixed with the seed and gradually reducing the amount of seed until they are eating the pellets without issue.
Because though, the fruit blend is full of dyes, after conversion I slowly mix the fruit blend and Zupreem natural until they are eating only the natural.
Once they eat the natural pellets, you can switch them to whichever non-dyed pellet diet you prefer.

I've used this method to convert budgies, cockatiels, canaries and finches, as well as doves and button quail

I sprout my seeds now before I feed them, much healthier, also a great way to get fresh foods into them since it still looks like seeds to them.

As for vets I prefer going with Board certified Avian Vets after a very bad experience with a small animal general practitioner and a young Meyer's parrot I had.
You can find a local Avian Vet by checking here

I LOVE that idea!
It still keeps a sense of humor about it, without having to call the poor thing something terrible. Speedy it is.

Speedy's hanging in there. She ate a ton of seed yesterday and has been pretty much just sleeping. We haven't heard a peep out of her. I think she's still stressed out and scared and tired.

She's taken to sleeping in the seed dish. Bear in mind that she's in a cockatiel cage, so everything is too big for her. I'm going to pick up new seed and water dispensers tonight and convert the seed dish into a little "nest" for her. I just don't like the idea of her eating where she's pooped. She'll get a new cage and budgie-sized stuff eventually but I don't want to stress her out any more than I absolutely have to at this point.

She was sleeping in the seed dish when I went to clean it this morning. I put my finger on her belly and she stepped right up onto it and let me move her to a perch. I think she's pretty tame already. I gave her seeds and a little apple, romaine, and cheerios this morning. We'll see if she'll eat it. She wouldn't get back onto my finger to move her back...probably because she was wide awake by then. She did fly around the cage a bit, though. It was good to see that she can get animated when she wants to.

A trip to the vet is scheduled for Monday. Right now, though, my gut instinct is that she just needs some time to relax and rest. We have a great avian and exotic vet a few towns over, so she'll be going to see a bird specialist. Her poop seems normal, she has a good appetite, and she responds when she has to, so my feeling is that she mostly needs time to settle in after her ordeal. She's a beauty, though. I'll post a picture when I can get one without stressing her out.

Rosemary, I know what you're saying about the pellets. I was never able to convert my cockatiel, Cracker, to a pellet diet. I tried about ten different kinds, including the fruit ones, and he wouldn't touch them. I tried mixing them with his seed and he'd just pick them out, walk over to the bars of the cage, and spit them onto the floor.
He'd do the same things with fruit and veggies. I finally was able to trick him into eating pellets and some fresh stuff by baking it into "bird bread". He always was a stubborn, cranky bird, though. It was so funny to have this little bird with these cute rosy cheeks with such a crabby attitide. Hopefully Speedy will be more cooperative.

Speedy gets a little more relaxed and lively every day. She still sleeps mostly, but she's started responding to me a bit when I talk to her by softly clicking her beak together...I'm not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing. She ate all of the fresh foods I gave her yesterday. We'll see how she does today.

I've been in contact with all the area police, vets, pet stores, etc, and nobody's reported her missing. It looks like she's here to stay.

She did consent to having a picture taken last night, so here's my new baby:

Tari,

I have had a few personal things going on but I wanted to check up on you and yours and Speedy.

Say the picture and I think that Speedy is a boy.
! Look at that cere! It will probably be bluer soon. Looking at what color it is now, I am 99.00% sure that you should be saying "Pretty Boy!"

He sounds a little tame. Are you doing the "talk into you are blue in the face" thing? A boy is always better at talking. Make sure you use your pet/baby voice.

Also, just got my Martha Stewart Oct. mag today. I am going to PM you about the article about bats in the house.

Rosemary
