I've read over the "Urination Problems" thread - and none of that seems to match what's happening in my case, so I thought I'd post here and get some advice.

I have 2 cats, a girl (Pandora) and a boy (Thor). Both are a little over a year old and were shelter babies. About 3 months ago we moved across the country from Montana to West Virginia. The "kids" seemed fine during the transition even as we moved to a new apartment. Then last week, I noticed the sheets were wet. On closer examination I realized the smell of cat pee and promptly washed everything in hot water with detergent and fabric softner.

I then febreezed the whole area to try and cover up the odor (does that do any good or does it make the problem worse?)

I'm not sure which cat is doing it. They both use the same litter box (they actually prefer it..we used to have 2 in different places and they would continue to use one together. It's cleaned throughout the day and we use a kind of natural clumping litter so no scent to it. Their diet, litter and everyday things haven't changed at all.

Both cats stay completely indoors. There aren't any stray cats around the area (or dogs). Aside from taking them both to a vet to be checked for a UTI, is there anything else I can do to keep this from happening again? It's the second time in almost 2 weeks.

Thanks so much for all your help!

Also forgot to add - both cats are fixed (spayed/neutered).

A couple of things come to mind...clean that spot with a good enzyme cleaner designed for pet cleanup, otherwise the smell will remain and call them back to the spot.

Do have a vet check and if all come out with a clean bill of health, you have to look for behavioral triggers. They are getting older and are probably trying to figure out who's the boss. There might be some very subtle intimidation going on (is anyone hanging around the doorways around the litter box? always in the line of sight?). I would also try putting out another box. They might need that now, or someone has decided they won't do both "functions" in the same box.

One more thing--have you been on any trips lately? maybe someone is feeling seperation anxiety?

I'm going to take them both to the vet tomorrow and get them checked out. I'm pretty sure I know who the culprit is but it never hurts to have them both looked at.

These two love each other dearly..they play together, sleep near each other, even clean each other up from time to time, so I think they're pretty inseperable. We moved about 3 months ago, but this problem hasn't been happening until about a week and a half ago.

I do notice that whoever does it must hold their bladder an awfully long time

The only other thing I can think of is that when it started, we were at my parents house during the day, and they have 3 cats and a dog, so it's possible one of the cats smelled one of the others...but everything has been washed since that time, so I'm not sure what else it could be...

Might try the second box if the vet gives them the A-OK. Now I just have to think of a way to keep them out of the bedroom (see "cats won't stop knocking" thread for my dilemma there!)
