Glitch held on to her lead by using the word confuse. Marianjela gained on luvmycat1 by using how. Still and lose were used but not until other secret words were used. Not used at all was good.

Today's KatKwiz was about how the Advanced Search function really works.

So, after does not mean after, after all; how do you like that? Actually it does, after August 31 includes today, doesn't it? Wait, August 31 began at midnight today, didn't it? So if you say something is after midnight August 31, it would include today, right? The bottom line here is that you now understand how the advanced search really interprets "after" a specific date, do you?

It makes since when you explained it the way you did, I understand it a little better now. "After" meaning after midnight of that day... Well, I knew something was up when I did a search for "after 2008-08-31 and got 4 hits... so there were 4 new members that joined today - after midnight. Their time or ours? :
So after I realized that there were results for AFTER "today's date" I had two theories. One was that somewhere in the world it was already September, and for those members, did they sign up in August? Not to them they didnt. Then my next idea was that the after date was included in the results. Which seemed more logical especially considering that (I imagine) most of our members arent a day ahead of the majority of us... Time Zone wise. Especially since today's number was four all by itself. So the twelve o'clock thing makes so much more sense. My initial search was for new members who joined "after" July 31, 2008, and that returned 304 hits. Then when I did a search for people who joined after Aug 31, 2008 and it returned 4 results, I came up with the GMT theory... and I was thinking simple math would make the answer 300.... BUT when I did a search for AFTER 2008-07-31 and BEFORE 2008-09-01 it still returned an answer of 304... that blew that guess out of the water. That's when I realized that whatever date you typed in the after box was included in the results.

If I made any sense.... Thinking fast here and fingers cant keep up...

And most of all, I now know how the search function works. Not that I think I would need to get that specific in the future, but at least I know just in case. It's kind of ironic though, when I was looking up the answer to the KatKwiz, before I typed in my date... I wondered if today would be included or not. I questioned myself before I even did it, but reasoned that it wouldnt. That's what I get. Just proves the "assumption" rule!

So Lee, did you ever find your niece on the list? Is that what prompted today's question? I'm glad the KatKwiz asked that today. It is always nice to learn something new.

PS - thanks again for the points!! And I'm glad to read about all your fun at yesterday's KatKlik. I loved the pictures, you guys look like you had a blast!

Oh yeah, and I like the tongue-twister: after doesnt mean after after all.... try saying that times real fast in the dark

It is still quite confusing to me since After July 31st would include anything after 11:59pm and August 1st would begin at 12am. Now that I know how TCS interprets after, I will not make the same mistake. It all stems on what the specific site considers after. I know I could go to another site and the first answer would have been right. It all boils down to interpretation.

Thanks for the points Lee...

I think you're right, it definitely hinges on someone else's rationalization. And it probably can be argued both ways, and definitely could be written more clearly to avoid misunderstanding, but it is nice to have the subject cleared up. At least now we know.

Although, I dont know when I'll ever need to be so specific. But, you never know... and now I will

i gotta say, i don't really understand why the search by dates works the way it does... but then, i don't understand many things
but yes, today [8/31] began @ midnite. but, to me at least, if you asked for posts AFTER a particular date, that date should NOT be included. maybe it's just the way vBulletin interprets things? i don't understand why it does this - but now that i know it, i guess i'll be able to adjust for this peculiarity!
i'm feeling better now, & realize that it's still august, not september!

Thanks for the points! Im really thinking you just like to confuse me though, I mean, thats a bunch of gibberish! I understand how the Advanced Search Function works but it took me a long time since when I first started on this site I didn't even know where to look for the advanced search! I guess this one just depends on how you read what you've written, a certain day starts at midnight so after that day would also include that day I think. I didn't get around to reading the katkwiz today, its 3:30am here and Im just now getting to check the cat site for the first time all day! If you say after august 31st it would still have todays posts and threads in there because of how it works I guess! I believe I do understand how it works, but I know you will find something new about it and explain some more stuff about it! You're getting pretty tricky now days.... Im going to really have to start paying attention to the katkwiz's daily otherwise Im not going to do so well! So, although Im positive I have not used a single secret word, Im off to bed! Its just impossible to keep my eyes open right now!

I went back and read katkwiz and thats pretty funny!! You do katkwery in your bare feel huh?? I guess I would too!
It looks like everyone was stumped with this one and I probably would have been one of them, although I do believe I knew that in the month of august I would have started with the first day of August, because thats just the way I understand it as, so whether right or wrong everyone see's the way it should be differently which is really interesting! Looks like everyone learned something new today which is awesome!! Go Lee! Posting in your Bare feet!! And for the onlookers, Its great you got to be there while he was doing it! How exciting, 3 TCS members meeting up like that, but it probably has something to do with the dallas meet up!

When Ryan (Hydroaxe) was here, he told me GMT was the basis to determine what day it is. Keeping in mind that I was in a -5 GMT time zone (scroll all the way to the bottom of this page and it tells you what time zone you are in) I tested this and that is the way it works. So, being in a -5 time zone, at 7 pm tonight it will be the next day as far as how this search engine works.

ok now THAT makes sense! I know about GMT but didn't even think about it when I answered the question the first time.
