Got an ax to grind?

What are those little things in life that just get under your skin?

I know this is silly, but I hate it when people say their cat is skiddish. What? He slides all over your floor leaving black marks? What they mean to say is skittish as in the cat is nervous or jumpy.

Probably this is the cruel and unfortunate result of being an English major. I do, after all, look up words in the Dictionary on my desk routinely to be sure I understand their meaning and have spelled them correctly and when someone ends a sentence with ellipses (...) when they mean a period I leave a dent in my ceiling. Obviously I get grammar. Too bad it doesn't pay better.

What drives you crazy?

Do a quick search, and you'll find a thread I started entitled "Grammar Nazi."

We both need to get a life, I guess.

We have a cat at the shelter someone named Skiddish and it annoys me each time I have to type it to update him on the website.

That being said, it wouldn't bother me on a forum where people may not speak English as a first language or have a learning disability and generally shorten words and type more informally.

I'm no "grammar nazi," but I cringe every time I hear the word "arguably."

I have q lot of these. "literally" means actually -- exactly. Once I heard a newscaster describe a book as literally "flying off the shelves" when she meant that it was selling well.

Then there's unique. Unique is one of a kind, so how can something be "very unique?"

I have more but Zazie's hel7ping me type and I'm giving up. Ouch! She's biting my fingers!

Two words (but not really): Leet Speak.

Example: OMG!!!11 L00k @ herz!

I hate it with every fiber of my being.

Will do. A good friend is also a grammar junkie. We purposely mangle words in text messages to tease each other. We're also the only people I know who've gotten drunk and quoted classic poetry. Maybe we should start a help group!

I am informal here and do not think about grammar as much as I do when I am writing for professional reasons. I sometimes will watch TV as I post and I sometimes laugh at my mistakes. I don't take them or other people's all that seriously.
We have all types of people here and there may be all sorts of reasons their grammar is off as icklemiss said. Some people are dyslexic or have a cat that interferes while someone is trying to articulate a point.

What does irk me is when someone puts 2 for to or too. Or 4 for 'for'. B for be and so on. It makes it hard to read.
