My ex is from Buffalo. A few years ago, a study showed that, between state, federal, city and county taxes, Buffalonians are the most taxed people in the country! They have lousy weather, too.

Nebraska is trying to tax food again! Jeez...like it doesn't already cost a fortune for groceries, now they're adding tax to it!

I hate everything about NY State! Today has not been a good day.First I found out I am not getting unempolyment,I qite my job,at first they thought I could get it because of what they did to us[changing our hours ect.] now they said we quit for personal reasons.Ok I can live with that. So, Ted goes up to welfare to see if we can get insurance only, I have deperession and take 2 med.Mind you Ted brings home $299.00 a week on unempolyment. They said we make to much! There is nothing they can do.I have 14 days of med.left, after that I do not know what we will do. Except I will be going off the celing again.Wish me luck!

Sherral, find out if the state has a program to help with your meds, or even check with your doctor to see if he can get you samples to get you through until you get insurance coverage. Running out of meds and facing depression without them can only make an unpleasant situation worse. I know, I am on medication for depression as well, and have tried to go without in times like what you're describing.
Sending good luck vibes your way!!!

AZ hasn't taxed groceries, since the late 70s. Some cities have a grocery tax, though. Tucson dumped theirs at the same time that the state did.

For a long time, the state taxed military pensions. My dad had to send them a check every year. About 5-6 years ago, a lawsuit was filed and the military retirees won. They all got back the money that they had paid, for all of those years. If the feds don't tax it, the state shouldn't.

Fortunately, my widow's pension is tax-free, too.

If you think that's bad - we pay 16% value-added tax (that's like sales tax, but is levied at every stage), and 7% on food. The government was talking about raising the tax on pet food from 7% to 16%, but dropped it - there probably would have been an uprising. We also pay close to $4.00 a gallon for gas, most of it taxes. People here don't earn more. We work until the end of July just to pay our taxes and social security contributions. The entire country is a mess.

Being single, with no dependents and no deductions, I fall into about the 34% bracket. I got bit for taxes, this year, because of my alimony.

Bill got a nice refund but, if it wasn't for the mortgage interest, he'd have been hurt.

My province has a 7% Sales tax and add to the the country's 8% Goods and Service Tax generally we have 15% taxes in Ontario. I really wish that some of these taxes would be reduced! I realize that Canada has some wonderful social programs, but maybe wouldn't need as many if we weren't taxed so much!

The older I get, the more I resent politicians and "big business". I hate working seven months a year for politicians' pensions and big corporations' tax deductions.

Definitely agree. By the way, I am from Buffalo and all my family lives there. It's a miserable place to live. The weather sucks, people are grumpy and rude...in general I don't like New York and wouldn't move back there.

My husband and I are in debt and are working hard to get out, but because we don't own anything and have no dependent's we get taxed up the ying yang. We would like to have children, but simply can't afford it for a while. We got almost nothing back on our taxes, and it was really frustrating. I feel like it's a no win situation sometimes.

Is it true that NH doesn't have any taxes on anything or jusr rumors?

I found the east coast more expensive than the west coast, is that true, or just a feeling?

If you could choose a state to live in, in the USA, what would you choose and why?
