If you are going to be staying with friends/relatives, that is one thing.

If, however, you have to go to a shelter run by the Red Cross or some other organization, they generally will not allow animals. They say that it has to do with (a) so many people having allergies, (b) sanitation, and (c) that their limilted resources have to go to helping PEOPLE.

It sucks, I know.

We don't have to worry about that cuz we are staying with family friends. Everything has been set up ahead of time, and the lady we are staying with lives here as well, she is lucky enough to have a house in Oklahoma as well. I hear it is a large house.

I am hoping this hurricane takes a turn south, because I'm supposed to go to Baton Rouge next Thursday.

There were federal ruling about animals being evacuated with their owners, and being able to stay in shelters. All you have to do is look at the photos of Katrina pets (and we have one, ourselves) to know why you should take them with you.

I will be thinking of you and hoping for the best. I was just told that I guess we are under manditory evacuation. I hope all the pet owners have plans for their pets. *Sigh* I did just hear though that my shadey will be staying in a garage. I guess I will be spending time in that garage myself. My poor girl has been through so much already this summer.

I plan on posting a pic soon, not sure when though. I love my girl.

Be safe all

I just found out that we are taking the old old dog. The cat has a place to go to, not with us, but everyone is being taken care of. That makes me feel so much better about this whole thing.

Shadey got a bath last night. She was not happy, but clean and smelling good. She was the most cuddly kitty last night.

Be safe.

I'm glad that all of the pets are going with you or someone else. Think of the garage as an adventure, with stories to tell for years.

Dallas is prepared for 4,000 evacuees. I haven't heard about Houston - they are still helping evacuees from Katrina.

I am so glad you are evacuating WITH your baby girl. We even had Katrina pets all the way here in Oregon. There were so many and so many in pitiful shape.

Be safe. I will keep you in my prayers.

Like laureen I have a carrier per cat. I have them stacked in a room next to my bedroom. I also have some emergency cans of food and water. I think everyone should have an emergency kit.

I am scheduled to go to San Antonio, Houston, and Baton Rouge next week. So, almost any track it takes, I'm going to be affected, at least financially.

I know exactly what you mean. I'm from Wisconsin, and moved to Texas about 6 years ago. I went through Hurricane Rita, and I'd rather brave a blizzard any ole day than to go through a hurricane again - which may happen.
They're saying that it may come this way, too.
If it does, and if it's anything like Hurricane Rita was, I'm moving back home!!

Regarding your husband, I sure hope he wasn't serious. (I haven't read the entire thread yet, so I don't know the entire story). But if he IS indeed serious, I would leave HIM behind, and take the cats!
Our pets are our responsibility too - just the same as our children are.

I hope you'll be all right!
I know how scared you must be. I'm scared, too..

Actually, there was a law passed that emergency evacuation plans had to accommodate animals; otherwise the states and local governments don't qualify for FEMA funding. The Pets Evacuation and Transportation Standards Act of 2006 was passed after the Katrina fiasco.

I just read the entire thread. I don't know how far away you are from the Lake Livingston area, Sophie, but if you need a place to stay, our doors are open.
We're supposed to get hit, too, but I don't think it will be as bad as your area.
We don't have a lot of extra room, but we could manage. And you can bring your furbies, too.
There may be a few "hissy fights" going on b/c we have ten cats, but we could manage.
Let me know what you think, and I'll PM you my phone number so we can make arrangements...

To the original OP, I'm glad to hear that you've made arrangements - including your furbies. I hope y'all well be all right!

Thank you all... I guess that the rain bands are already making landfall. I am okay with loosing what we left there. I have my hard drive out of my computer, so I wont loose stuff I care about.

Shadey stayed in the garage with 3 dogs and a cat she doesn't know. I can't find her this morning though. One big dog and the little dog were in carriers. We got in about 4am so they weren't caged too long.

Shadey's trip went well, she was in my lap for most of it. She has a soft carrier. I let her out towards the end and let her sleep in my lap where i knew she would be most comfortable. I know animals should be left in carriers on trips, but I just wanted her to know I was there.

The dogs got all bickery to each other and snappy. but...

Well i saw a picture of hat it looks like today, and hmmm.. I may be back in Wyoming before too long while things get all taken care of.

Thank you for your thoughts.

Sophie, how are you? I can't wait to hear from ya.

Be safe.

I am glad to hear you are in safe. You and the others in the path are on my mind. I hope it weakens before landfall.

Oh please take her -she will be scared by herself and may easily get lost. Remember all the lost pets after katrina! Your husband needs to know the cat is a family member!! I am shocked he would say that!

Good luck and stay safe- this does indeed look like a bad storm!

lol, she is with me in oklahoma stuck in a garage with three dogs and a cat she doesn't know. I haven't seen her since last night.
I would NEVER leave her, I had trouble sleeping knowing she was in a garage without me, and with animals she is not comfortable with. I am so used to her cuddling with me, with her little arms around me, and kissing my chin. It was hard without my teddy kitty cat. She's my cuddly girl.

I'm glad you and your babies are OK, I hope everyone and their pets are safe. Seems like that storm it's going to hit a big area and they say it's a strong one. I'll be praying for all of you. God bless.
