Hi,
I trapped a 4 month old feral and took her to the vet to get her checked out and to do a prespay checkup. She's pregnant and due in 2-3 weeks. When I picked her up (a little less then a week ago), she was skin and bones, but she's filling out now. Behaviourally, she growls and hisses a lot until you actually start scratching her. Then she purrs and head butts my hands looking for more attention.

My question is this - How likely is it that she's going to have issues with giving birth due to her very small size? And how do I get her socialized enough in 2 weeks to let me help her if she needs it? This is my first feral, so any advice would be much appreciated.

I can't give much advice as all of my ferals have given birth outside.

I had a feral who was about 7 months old give birth last year and she did fine all by herself. She did such a good job hiding them that I was totally unaware that there were babies in my yard! And when I did see them at about four weeks, I thought there was no way that this little girl could be the mother! I thought that another cat was the mother and that she had left them. Also about that time a group of raccoons started to come around, So one night when I saw the raccoons coming I scooped up all the kittens and brought them into the house with this young feral watching. She let me and didn't utter a peep. I fed them with a dropper that night and kept them warm and the next morning put them outside to see if the mother would come for her. Next thing I knew this little feral girl was feeding them and cleaning them. It grew to be a pattern. She would let me bring them in at night and be waiting for them in the morning. She really was a sweet little girl! She disappeared one day with a couple of other ferals and I kept all of her kittens. They reminded me of her- I couldn't give any away...

I guess the thing I'm trying to say is that she seemed to know that I could be trusted and I think that your feral will learn if she doesn't know already, that you can be trusted.
You've made great strides with the fact that she lets you pet her.

Anyway...Keep up the good work! That feral is very lucky that you found her!
