...I moved into my dorm to start my freshman year at Tulane University in New Orleans. And three years ago today, the school was evacuated and the semester postponed pending the outcome of Hurricane Katrina.

I was fortunate not to lose my home, but that hurricane has had some pretty far-reaching consequences in my life.

Over the next few days, I think we should all take a little time to remember what happened in New Orleans three years ago, and to send some vibes to all of those who lost their homes, their lives, or their loved ones.

My thoughts go out to all who suffered through Katrina and the continuing aftermath. I have been helping reunite people and pets this whole time...yes there are still kitties on the streets that owners are trying to catch.

There was so much judgment. Most people don't realize that people tried to evacuate with their pets, only to have authorities let them out of their carriers onto the streets at the evacuation sites. While yes there were "bad owners" they certainly were not the majority and most people did not just abandon their animals.

Now, we have Gustav setting sites straight onto the same area. What is worse, Katrina landed Aug 28th and the levees broke early morning Aug 29th. Gustav is predicted to hit Aug 30th. I can't imagine the emotional trauma the Katrina survivors are going through right now.

For all in the Gulf Coast please evacuate early...stay safe.

It's been almost three years since Hurricane Rita hit Texas, too.

I sure hope New Orleans (or anywhere else, too, for that matter) doesn't get hit again. I don't think the city could withstand another direct hit.

Go away, Gustav!

I am reading an excellent book now titled, "Pawprints of Katrina" about the massively huge animal rescue effort in LA. It is a good book but I must read it in increments because it gets to me. Authored by a woman that was there immediately following Katrina and she stayed four months I think. She went down with Best Friends.

I believe I read that President Bush signed legislation making it mandatory that pets are rescued with their humans or something to that effect.

I work with many people who lost homes in New Orleans and the surrounding parishes. Luckily, no one from the company I work for lost their lives. New Orleans is about 2-1/2 hours away from me.

This is an image of Louisiana. The red star is New Orleans. The blue star is where I live. The green star is where I will eventually move to.

This is the latest computer models for Gustav.

Actually, the prediction for Gustav is September 1 or 2.
