He is an absolute lamb. I can pill him a lot easier than I can Bonaparte or Biscotte. And he lets me clean any litter or food out of his paw with cotton soaked in Betadine. I can hardly believe that this is the cat that was beating all s*** out of my cats a couple of weeks ago. He now goes out of the cage for several hours a day, and has the run of the back hall and corridor, where he is still separated from the others by two doors. It ios good because he has a French door through which he can watch outside.

Aren't they all French doors at your place?

That went through my mind as I wrote it, but I didn't know what else to call it! A 'glass' door just sounds silly in English, though in French they are 'portes vitrees' or glazed doors.

Laurie, I am in a terrible quandary. I haven't even put Milo in the signature yet, just because I haven't got round to sorting out a good headshot of him.

But to be serious, I do not know what to do about Ginger Tom. You notice I have not named him, because it always happens that once you name them, they are yours!

When I thought he was semi-feral, it was easy. I would neuter him, treat him for his paw etc and then release him here, hoping that he would be less aggressive. He could become my outdoor cat.

But now it is a different story. He is used to houses, though from how long ago I have no idea. He didn't freak out at the vacuum cleaner yesterday, and headbutted three visitors who came to tea. But at present I have 11 cats - my eitght, the two kittens that my daughter is adopting and that have to stay with me for at least 7 months while their papers for the UK are prepared, and now Ginger Tom whom I know does not get on with my lot at all. They have all just recovered from the most horrendous series of illnesses that I am sure were brought on by stress and I really cannot subject them to all that again. We are still having problems with Milo, though it is getting better, and I am keeping the kittens isolated for the time being. I also must remember I have a problem cat in the shape of Cinders, who lives in my bedroom and pees on the bed whenever she gets upset, which includes interaction with most of the other cats. I had to change all my bedding three times last week and have resorted to plastic undersheets. It is no way to live.

But the cat deserves a home. If I take him to the shelter he will not be adopted - red males are ten a penny and handsome though he is, I must be realistic. He is used to outdoors and would be miserable cooped up for the rest of his life. I have started asking friends, but I am not getting any positive vibes.

The good news is that his paw is getting better - I can now see the shape of the pads under all the scabbing. It is still swollen though.

And the next fortnight is going to be horrendous anyway - my 94 year old parents are going to be here and my father has advanced dementia and will leave all doors open. I can lock the outside ones but how to keep the cats from mixing is going to occupy me 24/7, as he wanders in the middle of the night.

How would you feel about just releasing him again once he's healed, and putting a small shelter outside for him, and feeding him regularly?

Sarah, I may do just that, as long as my cats feel safe with him there. The three who go out (Wellington, Bonaparte and Ellie) are rushing out hte door these days much happier as they know he is not there. I just hope the neutering helps. But he is, or has been, a house cat and it seems a shame to deprive him of the home comforts and company that he obviously loves. There is no easy option here.

Sending prayers and vibes that your miracle answer comes soon, and that your parents' stay with you goes much better than expected - you are such an angel for all that you do, such a loving, compassionate, courageous heart, blessings for you, too, Jenny!

Just looking at him made me cry. He is so handsome and so sweet looking. I would be as torn as you over him. I hope you can find someone loving who can love up like he deserves.

Jenny, I'm just catching up here, and really hope you can find a home for him, once his paw trouble is sorted out. He's a little love, and if it weren't for Jamie's attitude towards other cats, and the cat overpopulation in my neighborhood, I'd offer to take him as an indoor/outdoor kitty. Good luck, to both of you.
