My problem with the Republican method is I wouldn't want to rely on only a faith based initiave to give a hand if I need it. For instance if I went for family planning and the only clinic in town was run by a faith that would only talk about abstinance and would not give me a condom or birth control pills. Or a shelter that would tell me that my girlfriend and I could not stay together as it is an abomination. Or that my husband who is a drunk could get sober with the grace of god when he really needed to be in a medical facility. I would rather have a bigger gov't administer this. And while many of the Republican tax cuts (which mainly benefited the wealthy) were funded by the tightening restrictions on welfare it also reduce school lunches, child care, child support enforcement, help for people with severe disabilities. And for the member that was upset her grandfather had to pay for his nursing home and could not gift her college money, that comes from the tightning of social services to pay for tax cuts.
But to be honest it is the last eight years of spending beyond our means and cutting the revenue stream via tax cut to put this country in a horrific deficit that leaves me slightly sick to my stomach. And while it sound good to have the Republican tax cuts it made and continue to make me think we have absolute horrible fiscal planners.
So those of us who neither want nor need assistance from the government are forced to pay into it so those who do participate can?
I don't think so, and that's exactly what many people find so upsetting. It's not my responsibility to pay for someone's birth control or rehab. As far as the man not covering his grandchild's college expenses due to his own responsibility to pay for nursing care, that's his problem. Should have saved more money if that was the plan.
Social programs are for EMERGENCIES and bad things happening, like floods, ricanes, medical emergencies, etc. Not to cover a lack of initiative or discipline that results in having to adjust your liefstyle when no one is there to bail you out.
The Democrats use that "free stuff" to control votes. Keep them in office, they'll be there with a handout when you need it. Maybe. If you want to trade off some of your hard earned income to pay for social programs, just donate to a soup kitchen or a free clinic. You'll see a much better return.
It's about responsibility to one's self. Your well being belongs to you, it's not my responsibilty, nor the governments.
