Grrrr!!! This is the second time today I've had the hiccups. The first time, they lasted about 45 minutes, and I was still at work. Oh yea, that was real great. Answering the phone and talking to customers and I kept having the hiccups.

Anyways, now I have them AGAIN! I don't know how I got them again, but now they've lasted about 20 minutes and I can't get rid of them. I've tried everything I can to get rid of them. I even did a search on here and tried the "secrets" but nothing worked. Anyone have any other ideas? What are your secret remedies to get rid of the hiccups?

I usually just try to breathe really deeply, thru your nose though. I get silly from hiccups due to lack of oxygen

Yup tried it, didn't work. Usually if I get something to drink, lay upside down, and swallow it, they go away. Sounds silly, but it usually works. But not this time. I don't even know how I got rid of them this afternoon. I was just drinking water on my way home, and suddenly they were gone.

I'm going crazy from them. I hate having them, they drive me nuts, especially twice in one day.

Ah, my dear, you have come to the right place. I posted this awhile back when someone else was having prolonged hiccups, and I promise... New-Agey as it sounds, this very brief little meditation really works:
_____________________________________

It helps to raise both arms up high, lean your head back a little, and take a nice deep breath... then just close your eyes and imagine...

...the warm, liquid light of the sun...

...pouring down like honey into your hands...

...and gently spiraling down through your arms...

...warming you everywhere it touches...

...easing down into your chest...

...sinking deeper, warm and soothing...

...and finally settling into a calm, still pool of golden light in your abdomen.

Sounds silly, even to me... but if you'll give it a sincere try, it'll work -- promise!

and if it doesn't......take a tablespoon of sugar, put it in your mouth, and swallow. Don't let it melt, you must swallow it dry! Mind you, this is very hard to do, and I think its the strain of concentrating and trying very hard to do this that makes your body stop hiccing, lol!

I know my brother occasionally gets them, lasting several days, and finally has to take a narcotic type of pain pill to get rid of them.

Okay, so I tried the meditation thing, a couple times, and it didn't work. I think it's cause I don't do good with meditation type things lol. And I tried the sugar thing. That didn't work either, but it was fun eating sugar. Yummmm lol.

So I figured to just do what I did earlier when I got them to stop, drink water. I took a bottle of water and just started chugging it, and miraculously, I think they stopped. I'll have to remember all your ideas next time I have them, and nothing will get them to go away. They are very interesting and useful ideas though

I rarely ever get them, that's why it was so weird to get them not once, but twice today.

I tend to get hiccups when there's too much acid on my stomach or I'm starting to get heart burn. In my case lots of water, eating something small, or even taking some Prilosec helps.

OMG I hear you. I had them yesterday for like 30 minutes. I finally held my breath to make them go away. (usually that doesn't work for me)

Oh I hate hiccups! Glad you got rid of yours!

Know the way I tend to get rid of my hiccups? Hubby insists on tickling them out of me! It only works sometimes, but he does it every time...

Oooh, I HATE hiccups! Whenever I get them, they usually last a long time and they are very painful. I get them when I eat or drink too fast and swallow air with it, or when I just swallow a lot of air really fast. And then I will burp and hiccup at the same time, and it hurts.

I'm glad you got rid of yours!

Haha maybe I should have my boyfriend try that next time. Except I hate to be tickled.

Me too, I hate it!
That's why he LOVES to use the hiccups as an excuse...

Oh man, my hubby is the same!!! He thinks it's the worlds funniest thing!

Apparently dehydration is one possible cause of hiccups, so drinking lots of water is definitely one good thing to try, especially if you get them a couple of times in a day

Ah, I'm sorry my little trick didn't work for you. It had always worked first-time for me until I got my gastric band surgery -- now it takes two or three tries.

Oh, hiccups with heart burn is the worst! It's "hiccup...ouch, hiccup...ouch!".

Two best things I've found for hiccups is either drinking salt water up-side-down (as in, head between your knees and drink for the other side of the glass) or an old bar remedy is lemon with bitters and sugar. Take a lemon slice, pour bitters on it and cover it with sugar. It looks completely nasty but it will shock your system enough that they usually stop. I think the whole thing is just shocking your system...that's why scaring and tickling sometimes helps.

That's okay.
I think it's just cause I'm not good at mediation. My mind likes to wander off and it's hard to sit still and not do anything. I really really tried hard to do it too.

OMG I wanted to. The worst part about them is that I was still at work. So I had to answer the phone and talk to customers while hiccuping and apologizing in the middle of what I was saying. It was wicked frustrating.

The thing is, I couldn't tell you the last time I got hiccups before those 2 times. It was just really weird to get them, and it was totally out of the blue. And then when I got them again at night, I was really annoyed lol

Seriously - you're probably gonna laugh at this one, but my son swears that this "remedy" works. He did it while he was here visiting, and he got rid of his hiccups..

Take a couple of matches, burn them, and then put them in a glass of water and drink it fast. I know it sounds kinda gaggy, but apparently the sulfur does something to get rid of hiccups. I haven't tried it yet myself, but I will the next time I get hiccups b/c I get them bad too sometimes.

It's worth a shot, anyway!
