Harry Potter-Good or Evil? - Page 2

I agree with about everything you all have covered on Harry Potter! Most of these anti-Harry groups just pick a line from the book and twist it into something that was not at all intended. How can these people say that it's evil, when they have obviously not taken the time to read it. As you've said, it has elements of fantasical witchcraft, but it mostly focuses on the children, their adventures, and what it takes to become a good person. (By the way, I'm glad you are so educated about wiccans, most people have it all wrong and its refreshing to see some people who know what they are talking about)

I love Harry Potter, I am reading the first book to my one class at school. They also love it, and it keeps them quiet for a few minutes, not always an easy thing to do!

If I had children of my own, I would definitely let them read HP. At least they are reading, and it's a lot better than some of the other influences on kids these days.

What is "wiccam" and "pagan"?

Since I am VERY VERY intruiged by all this, I would love to learn more.

I am a fanatic for all the latest fantasy shows: Buffy is on the top of my list, followed by Angel, Charmed, even "Sabrina..."... - I just love it!!!

Needless to say, I am a "Lord of The Ring" freak as well - first the books, now the movie! I know for sure I will go to New Zealand, because Im pretty sure a lot of Nature's power is out there!

Is it obviouse I just LOVE Harry Potter?!?!?! I don't know how anyone can think its something else than wonderful!!!

I love this thread!!!!

BTW, I didn't preorder my book this time around, because I did that with goblet, and I didn't get it until the day AFTER it became available and it just about killed me that it was in the stores and I couldn't buy it immediately because I already had a copy coming that I had paid for. I will be one of those nitwits who stand in line at barnes and noble at midnight the day it becomes available

I got an email from Amazon, where I preordered, promising that I would have the new book on release day! Hope so.

Has anyone bought the Chamber of Secrets DVD yet? There's a good interview with J.K. Rowling and the movie screenwriter included in the bonus materials. Honestly, I am not anywhere as big a fan of the movies as the actual books. The richness of Rowling's writing is nearly impossible to bring to the screen.

I, too, read the first 2 books to my 5th grade classes 2 years ago. They loved them. My son has been a big HP fan from the get-go. My daughter wouldn't read the books, because she was intimidated by their length. On Saturday, I sat down with her and read aloud chapter 1 from book 1. That's all it took. She has now read all 4 multiple times. It really helped her overcome a reading stumbling block.

Wiccan is a kind of pagan. Kinda of like catholic is a kind of christain. If you are christain it doesn't mean you are catholic, and if you are pagan it doesn't mean you are wiccan

Over all pagan it is a nauture based faith. It is a very loose faith and different people beleave slightly different things. Most beleave that the god and goddess are all around us in nature. There is a God and Goddess, they are both good and bad (in my mind I think of them as one). Since God is supposed to be all things, it made since to me that good would be male and female, and good and bad. We have no devil, we don't beleave in hell. We beleave in karma. You do something bad karma is going to bite ya hard Instead of lots of rules we just have on. Pretty much the rule is do what you want, as long as you don't hurt anyone.
We pratice "magic" which is really just praying. I light a candle a say a prayer nothing all that scary
That's pretty much the basics off it.

I got an email from Amazon about HP being delivered on the release date and am thinking about preordering it. I'm so glad they are doing it that way this year. Maybe they got a lot of complaints about people not getting book 4 until 2 days after it was in stores.

I got it this past weekend. I enjoyed the extras, especially the interview, but some of the other things (like the car ride through the Forbidden Forest) were obviously geared more towards kids. I agree, it's impossible to bring all of the depth of the HP world to life in a 2-3 hour movie. But, I have to say I LOVE the Quidditch scences. They are just as I pictured them.

Thanks for your very detailed reply, I think I understand it better now. One thing is for sure, I am definately going to study the subject further...

I find this very interesting, and even though I am a Jew, I think my beliefs are closer to what you explained than anything else...

Thanks again!

As a former teacher, I am all for the Harry Potter books! They show children that wonderful new worlds can open up to them when they open a good book. And yes, I am a fan myself. The imagination of J.K. Rowling is a true gift and we should feel honored that she is sharing it with the world. And as far as people with their panties in a knot over children's literature goes.....what about "Tom Sawyer"? Some people thought that Tom and Huck were the epitimy of evil and should be banned forever. I personally think that Harry Potter is going to take his place beside Tom Sawyer as a children's classic that will endure for generations.

And yes, I have "Chamber of Secrets" on DVD and yes the extra computer games and special features on the 2nd DVD is great!! I also think the second movie is slightly better than the first. Does anyone else think the same?

I grew up in a Pentecostal family as well. We were taught that witches and Satan go hand and hand and are to be shunned.
I read the posts about witchcraft being a religion of goodness and all but is it any different than praying to a higher being?
If you wish/pray hard enough for something, more than likely your efforts will be turned to that wish and it will come true in the long run.
Those of you who claim to be Wiccan...do you practice witchcraft of do you just claim to be Wiccan when the subject comes up? Just wondering. I claim to be baptist and pray "here and there" but I do not go to church or refrain from christian "no-no's such as drinking or living with my boyfriend.
Do you stir "witches brew's" or cast spells or is it a milder form of the Wiccan religion that you practice (like the milder form of Christianity that I practice).

I am trying not to offend anyone, I am curious the extent that some may persue the subject.

IMO,
Ginger

Well, I can't speak for everyone here, but I don't really consider myself Wiccan so much as Pagan. My beliefs are rather general, where Wicca is very structured. I do believe in a higher power, but not the Christian god- if I had to label the Power I would say Goddess, but again I have a more 'general' sense of it. I like to think of it more along the lines of Gaia- Mother Earth.

I'm not very ritual oriented- i don't cast spells or stir any brews. I don't even own a Nimbus 2000

There are so many facets of paganism- its a very broad belief system. Two rules, basically sum it up, which I believe were already mentioned. Do what you will, as long as you harm no one, and the law of Karma- what you send out comes back threefold.

Anyone who claims to be Wiccan just for the sake of conversation , isn't Wiccan at all, and IMO is risking bad Karma for claiming to be something they aren't.

Hope that all made sense, its early and I haven't had any coffee yet

I'm getting off the subject, but last night I watched "HP and the Chamber of Secrets" and thought it was great! Quite personally, I think mankind is unable to understand "God's message", so we should try to remain open-minded. Everyone has his/her own interpretation of things, and who is to say what is "right!? I'm really afraid of being too presumptous.
