Hi,

My cat has had a urine infection for around three weeks. She has blood in her urine and goes to the loo frequently.

I took her to the vet 5 days ago where she had an injection which should have cured it, however it doesn't seem to have done anything. I'm going to take her back to the vet on Monday.

Around 5 weeks ago, my cat had ingested hair bleach (a careless family member had spilled it on the floor and the poor cat sat in it), she vomited it up and I fed her cream to help it pass (after taking her to the vet).

Anyway, I don't know whether or not this is linked to the urine infection. They vet said there's a possibility it's damaged her kidneys.

Has anyone else had experience of a pet with a bladder infection that won't go away easily ?

Your Cat may have kidney damage from the bleach.
My Coco has bladder infections that take months to go away.
It takes over 2 months for Coco bladder infections to go away every time she has one. Did the Vet take any blood tests for her kidneys.
I have had Cats with Kidney problems and Cats with bladder problems.
From what you say your cat acts like Coco with her bladder problems.
If you type in Coco or Bladder Problems you will find alot of my posts about Coco. Can you take her back to the vet sooner. Bladder Infections can go to the Kidneys if you wait. Monday is to long to wait.

Your vet can do bloodwork to determine whether or not the bleach has caused kidney damage. Ask to have your cat's Creatinine and BUN levels checked. An elevation can indicate ARF (acute renal failure.) If treated early, and aggressively, you can sometimes prevent ARF from becoming chronic renal failure (CRF.) I have two cats with CRF. Cleo was diagnosed 7 1/2 years ago, and is doing great! Maggie was diagnosed about 2 years ago, and is also doing fine. Lola had a urinary tract infection (URI) a year or so ago. It took three different antibiotics, and a couple of months to get it under control. She's been doing fine since, with no kidney problems associated with the URI. Good luck to you and your kitty!

ARF can be far more fast acting than CRF and I'm more scared of it that CRF. I lost a cat to ARF that developed from undiagnosed CRF (she was young, I only had her for a short time and she showed no outward signs of CRF).

I also suggest testing for kidney damage. Poisons can cause ARF and if it becomes bad enough, you can lose your baby. My opinion on this will always be to safe rather than sorry. Get the test done to ease your mind.

I lost Stormy to Arf last Dec 5th and we didnt even know she had it. The Vet belives she had a Kidney Cancer or a Defect. I also have lost Cats to Crf. I have Stormys Mom and she is 16 and never had Kidney problems. Who would expect a 5 year old Cat to get it. I am afraid Coco will get Kidney problems because of her age now. She has the bladder infections. How is your Cat acting. Coco with her bladder problems acts differant then the cats that had the Kidney problems. I still would have your cats kidneys checked because the bleach. I loss Yoshi to Kidney Stones that could not be removed at age 5 also a month after Stormy. They both have the same Dad so I always wonder if that is where the problems came from. Yoshis mom I had tested for kidney problems and she is fine. They do think Yoshi had fip also.

Hi,

Thanks for the advice. I'm taking her to the vet tonight for blood tests.

I think it is a stubborn bladder infection though. Apart from going to the loo more often, she is acting completely normal. Apart from yesterday - I was stroking her tummy and pressed around her bladder, she wasn't impressed and had a swipe at me ! so hopefully that indicates a bladder infection.

It's a bit of a relief to hear other people have cats with persistant bladder problems. Anyway, we shall see what the vet says. I'll keep you informed.
