Yay!!! I am on my 3rd and final cast (I hope this all works)!!! I spent a whole day decorating it yesterday. This means that I will be flying home to visit my people while I am on crutches
Any tips to flying while on crutches?

It seems to be a common opinion out here that I belong in an ice cream parlor back in the 50's or 60's

Now that's a cast!

The only advice I can think to give you is to go to the bathroom before you get on the plane! Those toilets on the plane are really cramped
and I can't imagine even trying to use one when on crutches. Also, call and make prior arrangements for transportation to and from the plane. Tell them that you are on crutches and need assistance with your bags etc, I think that some airlines even have motorized carts that they can transport you in.

Thank you for the kind comments!

I love Raina's cast! If I had gotten a colored cast, then I probably wouldn't have decorated them.

Natalie_ca - my hubby will be handling the luggage and I have requested that the airlines provide a wheelchair for me to get around in the terminals. My parents will be picking us up once we arrive at out final destination, so I am sure that Dad will help with the luggage. I hope I don't have to go to the bathroom on the plane. You are right about those little facilities, they are impossible even without crutches

That is a beautiful cast! Is the surface a kind of knitted material that you stitch? If so, do you stitch it before you put it on the cast, or do you have to manhandle your leg around to stitch all over it?

Whatever you do, it's beautiful
Now tell me they don't just slice right through that when they take it off.

Wow! Great cast!!!

When I broke my foot a few of years ago, I had to fly from NYC to Minneapolis. I had already made the reservation, and I was damned if I was going to lose that money.

I had called ahead and asked for a bulkhead seat, if there was one available. Once I got to the check-in desk, they asked if I wanted a wheelchair, and the guy wheeled me to the gate. Then I made it a point to go up to the desk and they included me in the pre-boarding of people who "needed assistance". The bulkhead seat was great, because there was plenty of room. Then they called ahead and there was someone in Minneapolis to greet me at the gate with a wheelchair.

I did all the same things on the return trip. It was easier than I thought it was going to be.

Good luck!

The surface is actually fiberglass. The Dr. left it rather rough this time, so I had to sand it down a bit and then blow it off with compressed air before I drew on it, but the drawing is directly on the cast itself. And yes, they do slice right through it when it is removed.
