i've just posted in the general lounge re £30 price tag for the following vet consultation - yoshi-doo has been scratching her ears & flicking her head for the last few days, so i suspected an ear infection & took her to the vets. the vet said she has a tiiiiinnnyyy hair in her left ear & that soon wax will carry it out. is a small hair in the ear canal likely to cause this much irritation??? if not, what else could cause the symptoms of scratching & flicking???? her ears are spotless clean & she is an indoor cat so doesn't get very mucky & the number of things that would go ''in'' her ears are limited. i just worry theres more going on. felinehypochondria!!!!

I wouldn't be inclined to think so. Sounds more like an allergy response, or as you suspected, an ear infection. Could also be the beginnings of an URI. I think I'd get a second opinion.

My new kitten was also flicking his head, scratching at his ears constantly. The Vet looked, didn't see anything...took a swab and for $33, was told that there were no mites......but she applied a topical 'something' for mites and fleas anyway between his shoulder blades....and by the next day...he stopped flicking and scratching and hasn't done it since, and that was a good 2 months ago.

So, even when nothing was seen by eye or microscope....there must have been something there.

I would get a second opinion too. Poor kitty must be uncomfortable.
