My dogs are infested with ticks. Frontline is not working. Someone told me to spray the yard. My cats mostly are inside and on the patio and do their deed outside the yard as I live in the country. Any comments on tick spraying and does it work? Cats are tick free thank goodness

We spray our yard and we live in an established neighborhood. I don't remember the name of the product, may still have the container. I got if from an animal health supply store. The bottle attaches to a garden hose and it sprays a measured amount out. Seems to work well.

My parents live in a rural area and they recently switched their dog to Revolution. No more ticks on the dog, but I got one on me while visiting

Maybe I need revolution!

How much acreage are we talking about and do you let them roam the entire property or do you have an enclosed area/yard for them?

If you don't have a really HUGE area to treat, I would recommend applying beneficial nematodes to your yard. They'll not only take care of the ticks, they'll take care of fleas and roaches.

Excellent idea. We did our property with the nematodes to kill the cinch bugs.

Yup! They pretty much take care of most soil-borne pests, including termites if you have those in your area. We started using nematodes when we had a termite infestation and the side benefits were lower numbers of cinch bugs, roaches (cat toys
), fleas, ants, and etc. We've seen an increase in the number of geckos (more cat toys
), good bees, and lizards.

Our kitties are indoor-only, but our neighbor has 2 indoor/outdoor kitties who come visit our yard frequently. It's nice to know they're not exposed to dangerous chemicals here.

Same question here. When I lived on 10 acres with most neighbors having at least that size lot, we had a lot of ticks to deal with. We used Frontline Plus (regular Frontline doesn't do as well as ticks) but remember that the tick has to bite the dog before it works on them. If you have ticks in the places where your dogs roam, they will bring them back on their bodies. If they are in an enclosed area, keep that area mowed regularly and mow around it. Ticks seem to thrive in tall grass. If you have acres to treat, it becomes a losing battle to use chemicals.

We never won the tick war but we controlled it. The dogs got baths on a regular basis (leave the shampoo on for 10 minutes to kill the ticks) and we did the "tick check" whenever they went outside. Just run your hands over their entire bodies, pull off the ticks and drop them into a bottle with soapy water. If you do it everytime they go out, the ticks don't bore into the skin and you can pick them out easily. And the dogs love the added attention and you don't get ticks into your house.
