I had the same problem with our BIG boy Carmelo. When we first got him, he was a girl, even the paperwork from the breeder said female. However, when "she" went to the vet, we found out she was in fact a he
I never even gave it a thought to look, after all, the breeder and paperwork said our cub was a girl. They brought the wrong cub and grabbed the male by mistake. Well, I am happy that we got that big boy, he is one very loving big kitty

When we went to get Stan, they were calling him "Stella"... we drove an hour to see the "little girl" and got a surprise! I am glad we took him anyway...he is also pretty fuzzy, so I can see the confusion

I always thought, that looking from behind with the tail up, girls looked more like a semicolon ;---boys look more like a colon :

Sometimes it is bad when the sex is wrong. My friend Edna adopted a Cat and they said it was a fixed female and she never looked to see what it was. It was a huge Cat and the name was Dephi. A few years ago the Cat became sick. She called the house call vet she uses. He came but Dephi died. Dephi turned out to be a boy and he died from male blockage. He had very long fur and was a huge cat. I did meet him. The Vet would have come sooner if they had know Delphi was a male and he would have lived.

aww, am sooo in love with your Carmelo!
i kind of hope he/she does turn out to be male, because i currently have just female's, & it'll remind me of the male cat i had when i was younger.

Take a picture and post it. Others have done that in order to determine gender.

My Simba started out as a "Sabrina," because the people at the pet store told me it was a "she." I guess they didn't know that most orange tabbies are male. (Though he wasn't very orange at that point, more beige, and turned more orange as he got older.) My first trip to the vet with "Sabrina" prompted me to change *his* name to something similar so it wouldn't be too confusing for the poor kitten.

We had a similar situation when we got Suzy and Sam. I'll leave out the long story of how we found the kittens, but we asked them to save us a boy and a girl. They said OK. We went to pick them up, and in due course the kitties introduced themselves as Suzy and Samuel. A few days later we went to the vet, did all the paperwork, got into the examining room. The vet did Suzy first while I held Samuel, then she took "him" and began -- and then looked up and said, "Samuel, eh? I don't think so," presenting two little butts, "See? The same!" So Samuel became Samantha.

I had never owned a cat before RIP Brownie adopted us. I really didn't know how to sex a cat - I mean, I could tell the sexes of my budgies by the color of their cere.
I had a mother of a friend of Jen who had always had cats come and look at Brownie. He was so docile for an outside cat that I thought he was a she. I called the cat and he came. First, she told me that he really was my cat since he let me pick him up and purred. Then she told me that Brownie was a girl.
So happy I gave him an asexual name.
I loved that big fat black tomcat!
