Late to this, Laureen, but sending now, and they're all right: you'll be fine -- you got it out of your system before crunch time.

Laureen, every theater rat knows that a bad dress rehearsal means a good opening night. Break a leg!

Honey, that is why they have dress rehersals the day before opening night. That works all the bugs out right then and there. And you know what they say, a bad dress rehersals means a GOOD opening night. I was in amature theater for a while, and everything that could go wrong DID go wrong. That's the nature of the beast. I found that things come together smoothly for opening night and then it just becomes automatic.

And, working the light board it NOT easy! I went in once, looked at the board, and said ok...I'll go back to makeup! But, I bet you won't ever hit that button again! (unless you have to...then, hit it!
)

Let us know how tonight went! Oh, what play are you doing?

i posted before - we're doing Lil Abner, a musical based on the comic strip of Al Capp.

ok, tonight, here's what went wrong: the Grand Drape caught on some stairs that SHOULD'VE been folded away before it closed.
a desk/wooden box [depends on the scene] didn't get turned when it should've - stayed turned wrong for several scenes...
our Pappy had a seizure during his next-to-last scene [we knew something was up - he flubbed his lines right before his exit - next thing, the ASM SR was telling us he was having a seizure.] he missed his last entrance [& his big speech!] but others took over for him. he also missed his curtain call/bow.

one of the other actors chipped his tooth on a prop.

Wow, sounds like an eventful opening! One thing though, even though the cast knew there were mistakes (like the desk/box) most of the time the audience doesn't even notice.

Hope the guy that plays Pappy is ok. I'm glad the rest of the cast could cover for him. Too bad he missed his speech and curtain call.

Lil' Abner was actually the first play I was involved in and it was a blast! How many shows are you doing?

well, we had a 'preview' for the final dress rehearsal, then 3 shows this weekend, a pickup rehearsal next thursday [often that's a benefit performance] & 3 shows next weekend.
so 6 'real' shows, & 2 'sorta' shows!

well, last night went pretty smoothly... but tonight, the stage manager's headseat stopped working. it was cutting in & out starting about the last 20 minutes. by the last 10 minutes, we couldn't hear her when she talked at all - & she's the cue caller! there are lots of cues in that last 10 minutes, too. so she moved over right next to me, & wore my headset, & i just looked at her the whole time for my cues. worked, as a temporary fix.

we found another headseat after the show, & determined that it was definitely her headset, not the box or cords, that was the problem. this is her own, personal headseat, so she's going to look for a replacement during the next 3 days [we're dark until this coming thursday]. if she doesn't find one, she'll use the one i was using, & i'll use the extra we found - it has covers for both ears, not just one like the others do. i think i'd prefer it, anyway - i'm spending 1/2 the time covering my free ear to make sure i hear her because the show is quite loud [at least, it is to me].

Glad things are smoothing out now!

That things only get better! I always laugh at our shows, because by the time we have them perfect, it's the final show!
And that's with our typical 5 week run. If it's only 3, we never pefect it.

Everyone makes mistakes, don't worry about it. Worst light disaster we had was our newbie light operator accidentally hit the "power" button on our light board, and sent us all in the dark! Everything went out for a bit, then we backstage crew turned on the operating lights- which means everything was full bright, even the house and during scene changes- then we reset the comp, then brought it back up and things were back to normal... I'm always amazed, and I'm sure you guys are this same way, how really, no matter what, the show must, and does, go on! We even made it work nearly pitch black... I'm sure your little thing was easily worked around, and as others have said, you won't do it again! It's really easy to pre emptively hit that little button... I was the same way my first time on lights.

And as for little things, not sure how long you've been doing theater, but the little errors always make for the best stories later! We still giggle at all OUR mistakes (don't blame one person, we're collective
) even 8 years later.

But Pappy! Now that is scary. I really hope he is ok! Glad everyone was able to cover for him. That he is ok.

oh, he's fine, now. he has seizures - it's not a new thing. i spoke to him saturday night, & told him we were discussing the fact that he was saying different things than usual... he told me he made his entrance, did the 1st part of the scene [other actors are in the beginning of it], but when he picked up the phone to finish, he started seeing the aura [evidently, that's his 1st symptom] & he couldn't remember anything... doesn't know now what exactly he said. decided to go ahead & exit, since he knew it was coming.
he was also Big Josh, in the production we did of "big, the musical' last Christmas. i was his secretary @ the toy company.
