My cat ran back inside the yard somewhere. I went onto the footpath and hissed at the tresspasser cat. THen i went back in my yard. My cat then went back on the footpath to have a look.

What was my cat's logic in doing this?

A direct stare, without blinking, is a sign of agression. Your cat was scared, because the other cat stared it down. You "the mommy" hissed and scared the agressor away. Your cat then came back, to make sure that everything was alright...and possibly to mark it;s territory, depending on age. Cats do a lot of communication with their eyes. You can even learn to communicate with your cat by eye contact. http://www.messybeast.com/cat_talk2.htm Everything is conveyed by winks and blinks. http://blog.pennlive.com/pets/2008/01/blinking.html I've done it with Sport, it's really cool it you can get it down. I can get Sport to come to me without calling him.
