Could also use some advice please guys, I have 2 female cats, both have lived together fine for around 4 years now, suddenly, they have started attacking each other for real, they hiss spit and cry really loudly, then the chase ensues which normally results in one of them being hurt and lots more noise after that, anyone have any ideas why they would suddenly start being so viscious all of a sudden?? any advice welcome

Hi! I have taken the liberty of moving your post into it's own thread so that hopefully, more people who might be able to help can see it.

Have you had your girls in to see their vet recently? Sometimes, cats who have lived together peacefully for a time will suddenly develop behavioral issues when one of the cats has come down with an illness. (Not saying this is what is going on with your sweeties, but it does happen) Cats will pick on a sick kitty to gain position in the pecking order if you will ... and will single out a weak or ill cat to dominate.

Might be helpful to have your girls in to see their vet, just in case and to rule out anything health-related.

Best of luck with your kitties.

Did they see another cat or animal outside? Sometimes when another cat invades on their territory they will take out their aggression on each other. This can happen even if they smell another cat. So if you've petted another cat and gotten their smell on your clothes, or have moved something in your home that might have come in contact with another kitty, the smell can trigger aggression.

We recently moved a rug in that was at my brother's house and it had hair from his cats on it. Whenever my kitties walk on the carpet, they will get more aggressive and hiss and swat at each other. It's like since the stranger cat isn't there, they will attack whatever cat is in the vicinity.

That may explain some of what I've been seeing with my cats. I have two 16 month old girls, littermates, who generally get along very well. There is some roughhousing and wrestling in play, but nothing to make me think they're hurting each other. About three weeks ago I took in a stray, another female who happens to be pregnant. My two mostly ignore her except for the occasional swat or hiss, but I've noticed that they are fighting with each other more.

Giving each of them a little extra individual attention seems to help.
