My boyfriend and I will be in Omaha for a week in mid-August. I'm going for work, and he's tagging along. I just switched jobs, so no paid time off for a few more months. He's getting out of the military, so he's not going to have any paid time off when he starts his fed gov't job, either. It's the only chance we have to "get away" until probably 2009.

My class is M-F, so I'll be busy during part of the day, but I'm flying in on Sunday, and flying out on Saturday. I've heard good things about the zoo, and they close at 5pm, so I'm thinking of flying out late on Saturday so I can go to the zoo in the morning. There's also the nearby casino to check out, I guess.

Any other suggestions?

You could go out and fly a radio-controlled model plane out over the SAC airbase and see how fast they can scramble!

Okay, so it's official. I will schedule my flight out as late as possible so I can go to the zoo. Other than the zoo (and steak), what is there to do?

Does anyone know if the casino is even worth checking out? The only casinos I've ever been to are Mohegan Sun and Foxwood's. I like poker, and I have limited experience with blackjack. Anyone know if the casino near Omaha is a good time?

We don't have to have a really exciting itinerary, but I'm trying to at least take advantage of whatever Omaha has to offer. Any outdoorsy places? Even though I'll be in class during the day, my BF is an outdoorsy type, so he'd probably enjoy doing something along those lines. Any suggestions?

ETA: I will have a rental car, so anything within a reasonable driving distance is fine. I'm also fine with late nights, so don't hold back.

I used to live in Nebraska, most of my dad's side of the family is out there.
These are the things we loved doing when we went to Omaha.

Heartland of America Park
Freedom Park
Fun Plex (amusement and water park)
Jazz on the Green (live music, free outside every Thursday evening in summer)
Omaha Botanical Gardens
