You know, I meant to ask this very same question.

At the moment, I have Sheltercare's Quickcare Gold for cats (I think), but 1) I'm not entirely sure I need it, and 2) I don't really know what else is out there that would be better or worse - I went with Sheltercare for now, because that's the company that the SPCA's "gift" of 30 days of pet insurance came from for Cleopatra.

i think you'd be better served to put the premiums in a special savings account each month. that way, you'd ear interest & EVERY health care problem would be covered.
most insurances don't cover everything, plus there's almost always some 'out-of-pocket' expenses...

::blink:: that IS a good idea...

the policy I have is supposed to be TOTALLY comprehensive (except for routine care and treatment like the flea treatments and such). It's supposed to reimburse me for 70% of the cost of everything else. I should probably claim the antibiotics I've been giving Cleopatra before I decide to cancel, though, even if it was only $25...

Perhaps I ought to cancel it after that - $20 a month can really add up...

The insurances I looked at had so many restrictions and limitations. Some things were covered at a small percentage. Some things had a large deductable, others weren't covered at all. I've heard tons of horror stories about getting reimbursed, claims being denied etc. By the time you figure all that in along with the premiums, you might as well have just saved all that money in the bank.

I ended up getting mine on a wellness plan that I'm very happy with. I chose it because I think if you keep your pet well through prevention, you're less likely to have serious illnesses. (That's less likely but it still could happen.)

The following is some of the stuff paid 100% by the plan my cats are on and with the comprehensive exams:
My cats get 2 comprehensive checkups a year.
All immunizations, deworming, nail clipping, anal exams.
Teeth cleaning once a year.
Sanitary shave/trim if needed.
Spay/Neuter (if not already done, of course!)
Flea treatment (if needed)
Travel exams/certificates

We also get free office visits if there is a concern.
Any treatment (for illness or accident, prescriptions etc.) is at 25% off (dependant on what plan is chosen but this is my plan).

Anyway... that is SOME of the advantages of the wellness plan. Some of the other insurance plans offered riders you paid extra for wellness stuff such as teeth cleaning etc. but they only paid part of it and your premium is higher. You can PM me if you want more information.

Oh yeah... and also after the first cat's premium, the second cats premium is 25% off!
