Hi all. I'm a new cat owner. I have had my cat for about a month now. He is a very mellow, easy going cat. The only problem I have ever had with him so far is just meowing a lot in the morning to wake me up. Well, last night I had a bigger problem. I came back in from the pool and he was acting normal until I sat down. He came up to me and started sniffing my hand feverishly, then for some unknown reason began nipping at me. The playful nipping turned into hard bites, so I pushed him off me. He then began nipping my ankles, rather hard. I couldn't tell if this was playing or not. It sure didn't seem like it as the nipping nearly drew blood. The only thing I can think of that would have caused him to change behavior so strangely was the smell of the pool water on me or the chlorine. He has always been a good cat, but now I'm on edge and uncomfortable around him for fear this will happen again. Any thought or help would be much appreciated!

Yep! It's the clorine! It affects them almost the same way that catnip does. My three girls go wild after my daughter gets out of the pool. Welcome to TCS!!

I agree. Be sure to shower thoroughly after being at the pool. Or, if you don't, after a while the cat may come to accept the chlorine smell as a part of you.

Just want to add that when cats bite us like that, it's their way of saying "You're mine". So if in the future he keeps doing it and he's hurting you, just cry out loudly in pain. He'll quickly understand he's hurting you and stop.
