Honestly there couldn't be better news than Punky eating on her own

That is fantastic!

Went to visit with Punky again today. She threw up last night. The vet wasn't in so I have to wait for him to call me later today. He wasn't in yesterday either and they closed their office at 2. This has me frustrated. I want someone with Punky as much as possible. Punky ate today while I was with her although not as much as she did yesterday. And she was much more lethargic today. I asked the vet tech if something could be given to her for the nausea and she said not really because cats are so limited to what they can tolerate. I also mentioned the feeding tube again and she said well it may not do any good if she's throwing up. This is coming from the vet tech though and not the vet. Any thoughts on this? I thought cats could take something like phenigren (sp?) for nausea?

I"m going to wait to talk with him this afternoon and go from there.

The vet called me this evening and Punky isn't doing great. She's become more jaundice and is vomiting more. He said that she's getting IV fluids around the clock, something for nausea and an antibiotic. He changed her food today to a kind that she doesn't have to swallow. It's absorbed into her cheeks and she can get nutrition that way at least for a while and it won't upset her stomach. She's urinating a lot from all the IV fluids which is good and he said she still has a good appetite which surprised him. She's more lethargic today but she's still in good spirits and he said that was a good sign. He said its sometimes gets worse before it gets better so she can still come around. But she's staying at the clinic at least a few more days. It could honestly go either way now and I'm so worried and anxious I can't think of anything else. I just don't want to loose her. It especially makes me sad to think that she's feeling so awful right now and may not know what's going on. I just hope with everything in me that she makes it thru this.

Just read your update. Don't worry too much, many times these things go up and down and get worse (ie. sever vomiting) before they get better. As for the feeding tube and her throwing up, as long as the food is in her for 10 or 15 minutes she is getting nutrients, vomiting is a constant battle with FLS cats. Hopefully they can inject her with things that will help with the nauseous feeling. Kismet would suddenly seem to get a bit better, then barf like crazy until she was just bringing up foam, then we would leave her for an hour, feed her again and see what happened. It took weeks.........so your kitty is doing as well as can be expected

Punky perked up some so the Vet let me take her home last night to see if she would eat for me as a trial run. She spent the first part of the night under the bed and wasn't interested in food. She was tired and slept. She came out to pee (the vet gave her lots of IV fluids before her trip home) so I took that opportunity to entice her to eat. She wasn't interested until I took some watered down juice from a can of tuna and mixed it into her canned food from the vet (Hills c/d). She was in heaven. But I called the ER vet to ask if I could give her actual tuna and they said no tuna or juice. Just to stick to what the vet sent home. So needless to say she didn't eat anymore. I gave her Nutri Cal 3 times last night and once this morning. Nutri Cal is a supplement that's kind of like peanut butter. You rub it on the side of their mouths and they lick it and absorb it thru the cheeks and lips.

Called the Vet this morning to see where to go from here. She did come out from under the bed around 12:30 and snuggled in bed with me for a couple hours then hung out by the window. So her spirits are good considering but she's not interested in eating right now. I'm hoping the Vet will let me give her something like tuna juice to entice her to eat more...

I would encourage you to put your strongest case to your own Vet about adding just the juice...if he says no, or isn't enthusiastic, ask why...what would contraindicate a little dilute tuna juice...he may have good reason - or, it might just be an "off-the-top" reaction.

I will. Still waiting on his call but I'll make sure to let him know how interested she was in it. I'm willing to feed her anything if she'll eat it....Thank for that tip!

ohh jeez that worries me that they would tell you not to feed her something she will eat! With liver failure getting ANYTHING into them is all that matters, doesn't matter what, Kismet spent a week eating purina luv and temptations because it kept her alive. I would honestly go against that advice and mix away........all that matters is that she eats.....

My Vet told me to try some tuna juice in her food and even some tuna. He also told me to try fried chicken. Nothing worked last night. She ate about 1/4 of a teaspoon of the Hills c/d drowned in tuna juice around 5:30 last night but that was it. I tried chicken baby food, pureed pumpkin, tuna flavored cat food, more regular tuna. I tried drowning some of the wet cat food in sardine juice. I warmed everything up. I tried room temperature. I tried cat treats....Nothing. She was more lethargic this morning and not herself at all so I took her back to the vet. He said at this point we'll probably have to tube feed her at the his office for a day or two...So, we'll see how that goes. Waiting to hear back from the Vet this afternoon.
