I know there have been a lot of threads on migraines lately, so sorry for another one!

I usually only get hormonal migraines that occur right before or in the beginning of menstruation. I have gotten a couple lately, though, that were totally unrelated to my hormones and that baffled me. Well, today I finally figured it out! The past 3 times I have drank this one coffee creamer I have gotten a migraine. The creamer has Carrageenan in it which is another name for MSG (according to my dad who has suffered from migraines for 30+ years!).

What was weird about my migraine (which I did not link the 2 until after the migraine) was that before my head ever started hurting my left arm had a feeling of weakness. It felt like I had just worked out really hard and my arm was fatigued. It was sort of weirding me out that my arm was feeling like that, so I was starting to get worried about a stroke or something (pretty unlikely as I am in my early 20's!!). About 45min to an hour after I felt weakness in my arm I started developing the migraine. That's when I realized the feeling of weakness in my arm was related as well as the cause being the creamer. I just hope now my body does not become sensitive to all sources of MSG...I would hate to have to watch every little thing I put in my body to avoid a migraine (my dad has to do this and it seems like a pain in the butt).

Has anybody else every gotten weakness in a limb before a migraine? I read online that this can be a type of aura, but I don't think it is very common. It definitely kind of freaked me out at first.

GRRR, I hate migraines so much, especially when nobody understands how debilitating they are!!!

(***sorry for the horrible typo of migraine in the title!!***)

It can happen as migraines commonly cause neurological symptoms. But since this is new for you and not part of your usual pattern for migraines, please make an appointment with your doctor to get this checked out. The main worry would be you could be having TIA's.

And I've noticed over the last few years, understanding of and acceptance of migraines has improved a little with the general public. News channels commonly do stories about migraines now, as well.

Ya, my mom has been telling me to go see a neurologist but I have been putting it off b/c I hate doctors as most of the time they are very unhelpful and uncaring. But if I have one more with that aura then I will go!

I agree the "general public" is a lot more understanding of migraines, unfortunately that it seems nobody I am around quite understand it(i.e. my boss, coworker, husband, friends, etc).

Thanks!
