Hi everyone,

First post on the site.....and I hope it could have been under better circumstances.

Anyway, a few days ago, I woke up to find that my cat of 16 years had gone missing. We had found him outdoors when he was a kitten, and he had been living indoors/outdoors ever since.

When I awoke on July 19, I found a 3 ft x 2 ft area covered in what I think was his fur, and it seemed to me that he was in an awful fight. There was also kitty poop in the middle of the area (sign of submission?).

There didn't seem to be any blood on the grass, but the amount of fur was disturbing. Some peopel have told me that he may have been attacked and killed by raccoons, though raccoons are usually rare in the area where I live.

I read a post about a forum member in France that found her cat after 3 months (awsome!) and we're hoping that same will happen here.

I know its difficult to say one way or the other, but if he's been injured and is hiding, is there any chance he might find his way back, or does the scene I described make it unlikely (i.e. injuries likely too severe?) We've looked around our yard and the neighbours yard, but haven't seen any signs, and we've asked neighbours if they've seen anything.

Any input would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Check and see if another cat is in the area. He probably would have gone to ground if he's injured or if there is a cat between him and home. Usually a stray Tom cat. Call him and look for him around dinner time, if he hears you he is more apt to come out. It's a terrible thing not knowing so keep up happy thoughts, I have had cats come home after a couple of weeks from hiding, usually when neighboring cats go out of heat. Good luck

All of my cats are indoor only and 3 of them have gotten out before. Mary was in an awful fight with some ferals and ran them away. Cleo and Seldon clash with the Tom cat outside sometimes. Seldon loses fur easily and you see it whenever he wrestles or when he fought outside. I was beside myself with worry but he was alright.

It is possible that your cat got in a skirmish and got scared. If there are Tom cats harassing him he may be scared and hiding somewhere. Since he has been outdoors he may find his way home when he feels safe. I would leave food out and water in case to draw him back. I put things that smelled like my cat in the yard to spread their scent.

Hope he comes home soon.

Hi everyone!

Thank you all for the kind words and tips! I spent all of last night looking for him, or any sign of him.....and although I didn't find anything during my search, he must have felt the good vibes coming from all of you!

I found him at my back door this morning at 5 a.m.! He's thinned out from being outdoors for the past 5 days, and he has bite marks on his neck and one of his front paws, but he otherwise seems to be doing alright, everything given. My brother has taken him to the vet to get him checked out, but I think he's gonna be fine.

I guess at his age (16 yrs) it may be best to keep him indoors from now on!

Thanks again everyone!

Oh thats such good news
My heart sank when I read your first post.

You may want to get a product called Feliway and another product called Rescue Remedy. These two things are nonharmful and can help your senior guy settlle inside keeping him calm in the process. Good Luck with the inside transition and let us know what the vet says.

Your situation is why more and more people are keeping their cats indoors. I keep mine in for that very reason. If I had an outdoor enclosure then I would allow them some outdoor time but they are happy inside.
He must have heard you or felt all of our vibes pushing him home. It is such a horrible feeling when they are missing.
