Does anyone here have experience with teaching their cat how to use the toilet. My Sport, being the rocket-scientist that he is, is going to learn how. I have read a few different methods and am probably going to combine a few thing from each. We have already started the porcess, with putting his litter box on a stack of books and slowly raising it up to the level of the toilet. I am probably going to use a training device, so he doesn't fall in when he is learning. That is my plan so far, and so far we are about 3 inches off of the floor, and moving very slowly. Like an inch a week. He is responding so well that it is unnerving, but any advice, tips, pointers or anything that anyone has to say on the situation would be greatly appreciated.

Someone on the boards did train their cats and was successful. But I'm not sure if the cats are still using the real toilet. Friends of mine who own 2 Oci's had theirs kinda trained, but the cats would not go unless you were in the room to watch - so they gave up after a few months and the cats are back to the normal litter pan.

IMO its a 50/50 shot and not worth it. My main concern is that the cats won't use a toilet if you are traveling or they go in another home or if they have to be boarded for a time. If your cats are not litter trained and willing to go back to it, you may have future problems.

I don't find it inconvienent or a chore to scoop litter pans - its something that just goes with owning a cat.

I, personally, wouldn't suggest it... it's a very unnatural position for the cat to get into in order to use a human toilet and then what do you do if your cat gets injured or when he becomes older and is unable physically to use the human toilet, yet won't use litter anymore? I sure as heck wouldn't want to get kicked off the potty either because my cat has to go.... you could end up with a real mess on your hands too since cats naturally want to cover their mess and toilet seats also don't have the greatest amount of grip on them for little paws

Just my opinion on the matter... I know my male cat sometimes almost stands for a pee and I sure wouldn't want to be cleaning up cat pee from all over the bathroom because he decided to stand

I used the LitterKwitter on my 3, it took about 2-3 months as I did all 3 cats at once. With 1 it would have been quicker but I wanted to make sure they all got it before moving up a level.

I didn't bother raising their original litter pan, I just took it away and put the starter red disk up on the toilet.

They'll use the toilet up at mums house too (I take them there to play) and they don't forget how to use a litter pan either - if i set one down they'll use it.

I was going to use the Citi Kitty. It sounds very much like the Litter Kwitter, a disc that you put in the toilet so they can't fall in...Kitty Jacuzzi...just kidding. I am taking it VERY slow, because Sport is a baby...I mean a little one, he's 8 weeks old and I've had him since he was 5. He's a smart one though, and it's strange...It's just Sport, Me and my partner Bob...just the 3 guys...and when either Bob or I go to the bathroom, so does Sport. He jumps into the litter box, suqats, actually goes...all the while, looking up at us while we're going, with this "look what I can do !!" look on his face. It's hysterical.

Peace

Fred used the toilet once and I had to rescue him from it. He had all 4 paws spread out and had actually used it, but then could not get his feet in a position to get down without falling in. He looked at it a few more times, but never tried it again.

Poor Fred, that stinks (no punn intended). I hope that Sport doesn't have that problems too. It's not that I hate cleaning the litter box. It's not my favorite chore in the world, but it's not that bad. I just scoop it every morning when I go to the bathroom. It doesn't smell or anything...probably because I clean it every day. I just think that it would be cool to have a caat that uses the tiolet. He's very smart, I have no doubt that he will be able to accomplish the task. Falling in on the way out is another issue all together. Only time will tell with that I guess, there's no training method for that, just a good sense of dexterity I guess. Thanks for the input, I never thought of that aspect of it.

that's part of why I did mine, just to see if they could
If they decide they want a litterpan back, it doesn't bother me at all. guess I'll find out when my new kittens come next year and i'll have a pan out for them.
