Over the river and through the woods...
Actually, it's been the first time I was at the fair in over 10 years, and I was surprised at the changes. Our area always used to be big into agriculture and kids were into 4-H so there were at least 5 barns full of animals for 4-H competitions. This year, all the animals were in one barn except for the horses that had their own but there were only 7 entered (used to be 2 barns for the horses alone!).

I just think it's sad that so many kids don't participate in things like 4-H anymore. I guess video games and TV have become their hobby now. Especially here where it's mainly rural. I personally think it is it parent's responsibility to get their kids out their actually doing something productive. But, that's just my opinion.

I did win a prize though! It was a tip jar for one of the volunteer fire depts so it went to a good cause. I won.....a Grizzly Bear Lamp!! It is the CHEESIEST thing you could ever see, but I LOVE it! The post has two resin grizzy bears climbing it to get to the bee's nest, and one has his tongue out. Actually, it goes well in our family room because it is done in blue and browns and has a fire place so it's perfect for the end table. Plus...I WON something!

Well, I also won yet another tool set for DH on a tip jar for another fire dept, so we're both happy. And, I ate like a pig! Apple chips with carmel sauce, open pit roast beef sandwich with horseradish and onions, and a HUGE blooming onion. Yeah, my stomach doesn't like me too much today, but it was worth it! Just had to share.

I agree with you on the number of animals shown at some fairs. We don't usually go to the local one but another about 90 minutes away as that is the one my BIL's kids showed their stuff when they were in 4H-but the youngest graduated HS late year. The state fairs -the Wisconsin one is in Milwaukee is pretty good still though.
But I can't miss my yearly fair food......

I really miss the Minnesota State Fair, used to go every year, it was always kind of bitter sweet though, cuz it meant summer was almost over. I miss the tom thumb doughnuts the most.

It is sad about the kids not getting out... But at least there's still some!

I love going to the fair, but haven't since we had a shooting here at ours on the fourth of July a few years ago... It's sad!

Gotta say, though, your post title made me think of the kids song "I went to the animal fair, the birds and the beasts were there, the big baboon by the light of the moon sat combing his auburn hair!"

I just love going to the fair!
I used to especially love going on the rides, but unfortunately, really can't do so anymore b/c of the situation with my back.
Playing the games is fun too - especially when you win a "cheesy" prize!

My s/o and I plan on visiting the Kemah Boardwalk as soon as we can save up a few bucks.
We'll probably do so next year, when my son & granddaughter come to visit again..

Ok, you asked for it! Here's a pic of my beautiful lamp! (don't mind the dust on the table) I haven't had a chance to put it in it's final home in the family room, but you can see the room in the background.
