Ok so I noticed my boy Lucas had fleas a couple months ago. I bathed him with flea shampoo and then noticed the next month he still had them. I sprayed him with some flea stuff and today I noticed he STILL had fleas! I NEED to get rid of them by this Saturday because he has a House Hold Pet show. He obviously can't go with fleas, but I just spent over $100 for this show and theres no refunds. I don't want to put any more chemicals on him, or anything that will make his fur all gross for the show. What should I do?!

Go to your vets office In buy flea medication. Anything over the counter Is basically useless, or rub him down with salt and your house! If you have cats/animals flea's will spread, and quickly. The cant stand the high amount of Sodium In salt. Good luck

It sounds like you need to treat your house. You have a flea infestation. I am willing to bet all your other cats (and dogs if you have them) have fleas as well. It can take up to 120 days for flea eggs to hatch. I don't know where they came from in the first place, but it really sounds like you have them in your house now. Not fun.

Capstar (get at the vet) will kill fleas on the animal within 30 minutes. You can also give him a bath with Dawn dish detergent ( use a small amount and rinse, rinse, rinse and rinse again). However, if you put him back in a flea infested environment then he is just going to have more fleas on him.

A spot on like revolution, advantage, frontline (not advantix this will kill cats) is your best bet for long term control.

Off brand spot treatments or general OTC flea powders or shampoos are not the way to control fleas long term. Most don't work and some can be detrimental with prolonged use.

Good luck with the fleas and the show!

You might see if any of the vets in your area carry Program. It is available as a liquid suspension that should be mixed in with some food or as a "flavor-tab"--a tablet given orally. You might try using that along with Capstar. Since both are given orally, they won't mess up your kitties fur.

The second half of this webpage describes using Program and Capstar together:

if you don't want to use a chemical de-flea-er for your home, food-grade DE, really pushed down into your carpet fibers, will help get rid of the adults. then vacuum it up [cut up a flea collar, put it in the vacuum bag to kill any really hardy fleas]. remove the bag, & discard immediately.

My only concern with rubbing down the cat with salt is that the salt will be bad for the cat. He's prone to lick himself and will probably lick up too much salt and get sick. And to be honest, I don't know if salt is effective against fleas.

Your best bet is to go to your vet and get either some Revolution or Advantage. That will work quickly and safely.

However you will still have to de-flea your house. The most effective and safe way is, as Laureen mentioned, Diatomaceous Earth. Here is a link which will give you more information:

Once you did a treatment with Advantage or Revolution you will only need to use the Fossil Shell grade, which is safe and edible for both humans and cats.

You will also need to vacuum your house really well and wash all bedding etc. Also, once you have applied the DE don't vacuum it out for a couple of days, if possible so it has a chance to work.

Good Luck!
