Mitzy is on whiskas wet food at the moment. And while my bunnies get the best food and my guinea pigs get the best food I have no idea what is the best food for cats. I keep hearing that whiskas is bad.But I don't know what is a good food that is readily available.

His last owners fed him whiskas supermeat (which I couldn't find so I got him those pouches which don't last long at all and was going to go get some supermeat elsewhere) but now I'm wondering if I should change the diet.

If I should, what brands are good? I know I should look at ingredients but I keep forgetting which ones to look for and which to avoid. I have a bad memory and my pet note book is at home (I'm at work) so I have nothing to list on.

check out this thread: what food do you use & why?
some of our UK members have posted on it... you might be able to pick up some names.
personally, for a dry food, i think having a named meat meal as the 1st ingredient is prime. that said, some cats do NOT do well w/certain grains, so many people feed the new grain free drys for kibble.
meat-wise, kinda depends on what you're trying to avoid. i avoid fish ingredients, because Chip's had crystals & a UTI, & fish can exacerbate things like that.

I would rather feed a poorer quality wet food then any dry food.
Please read the label on what you are feeding? What are the ingredients? Do you know what they mean? Is the first ingrdiant a muscle meat like chicken or meal or other things?

Dry foods are the number 1 cause of diabetes in cats as I have found out.
The problems associated with Dry food is that they are loaded with grains and carbohydrates which many cats (carnivores) cannot process. Also, Most of the moisture a cat needs is suppose to be in the food but in
Dry, 95% of it is zapped out of dry foods in the processing. Another thing, most use horrible ingredients and don't use a muscle meat as the primary ingredient and use vegetable based protein versus animal. Not good for an animal that has to eat meat to survive. http://www.catinfo.org/#My_Cat_is_Do...ne_on_Dry_Food

Nutrition since there are so many bad things out there is very important to your cat’s health
Contrary to what you may have heard; dry foods are not a great thing to feed a cat.

Dry foods are the number 1 cause of diabetes in cats as well as being a huge contributing factor to kidney disease, obesity, crystals, u.t.i’s and a host of other problems. Food allergies are very common when feeding dry foods. Rashes, scabs behind the tail and on the chin are all symptoms

You want to pick a canned food w/o gravy (gravy=carbs) that uses a muscle meat as the first ingredient and doesn't have corn at least in the first 3 ingredients if at all. The best food for cats does not contain any grains at all.
Fancy feast is a middle grade food with 9lives, friskies whiskas lower grade canned and wellness and merrick upper grade human quality foods. I would rather feed a middle grade canned food then the top of the line dry food.
Also, dry food is not proven to be better for teeth. Does a hard pretzel clean your teeth or do pieces of it get stuck? http://www.felinefuture.com/nutrition/bpo_ch4a.php

Vetinarian diets The reason your vet thinks so highly of the pet food they sell probably has more to do with money than nutrition. In vet school, the only classes offered on nutrition usually last a few weeks, and are taught by representatives from the pet food companies. Vet students may also receive free food for their own dogs and cats at home. They could get an Iams notebook, a Purina purse and some free pizza. http://iml.jou.ufl.edu/projects/Spri...tFood/Vets.htm

DRY food is 10-12% moisture by VOLUME so it is not less 95% moisture
...

MANY MANY cats live long HEALTHY lives on grocery dry ... Is canned healthier IMHO yes .. and many of the more recent yet NOT long standing studies prove it ... IMHO READ READ Read ... then make the choice you feel works for you and your cat ...

IN 30 yrs of kitty ownership I have only feed NON grocery wet and dry for about 6-7 yrs ,... but the cats all had WET and DRY plus table scraps of cooked and raw ... all lived past the NORMAL lifespan of a cat( in their days 10-13 yrs ) 14 -~20 yrs ... IN other words YES IMHO higher quality likely will cause less issues but the majority of cats eat IMHO crap and MOST live to old age before issues develop which are the same issues in OLD humans...

MOST VETs DO NOT know much about nutrition but the ones I am lucky enough to have one has a masters in nutrition ( she recommends RAW but only to those willing to do the HOMEWORK)... ORGAN meats SHOULD NOT be first in a can as in a NATURAL diet they only make up about 15%

When we fed Mitzi some whiskas wet food she was sick, so then we switched to Felix as good as it looks, and she is now madly in love with it.

You could try a few different brands and see what he likes best

Yes, Whiskas is a cheap and nasty food to be honest. If Mitzy smells, and i mean smells when she's at the litterbox, that's the reason why

My kids get the hi-life wet food. It's a lot more expensive than the Whiskas, but it's better quality.

For dry food i've just switched them over to Royal Canin Intensive Hairball treatment because their shedding terrible at the moment
Again expensive, but i like to know their getting a good quality food rather than a lot of animal parts which is in the cheaper brands

It's normal to have a little odour, but with my three it's gone as soon as it's buried in their litter, but when i first got Rosie she stank!
She was on the Whiskas kitten wet food when i brought her home, but that soon changed
