I posted in a different forum that I lost my
Bellah
a week ago. I still have Patches 4-5 yrs , Serena 4 months (and my daughters cat Lily approx 1 yr that I'm caring for) , Tuesday our new addition Grace will be joining us. We also have Zeus an 11 yr old Block Head Chocolate lab who is blind. We got him 6 months ago when his owner brought him to us on Christmas day saying if we don't take him hes going to be put down. I am a cat person , I have never had a dog , but I couldn't let him be put down so now we have a giant dog skin rug as we call him lol. As luck would have it , we had just purchased a house that part of it used to be a dog groomer .... so our yard is totally fenced in and dog proof.

We have found a food thats working for the Zeus man... After doing allot of reading and searches , my head is spinning about cat food.

Seems that its bad to have wheat in the dry food? or is dry food bad altogether?

We are from New England and have usually fed Blue Seal ... are they still any good?

Wet only ? Dry only?

2 of the cats are Maine Coon Mixes does that alter what we should be feeding?

Then theres litter.... The woman from the shelter that Grace is coming from says clay based cat litter is toxic to the cats and to people. ok , so now what do I do?

As you can see my head is spinning..... any help is appreciated.

I am sorry for your loss, but congratulations on your new addition!

I exhausted myself as well before finding a food I am happy with. Right now I have been feeding my 3 babies Wellness grain free canned for about 2 months. They love it, and I have noticed a couple things:

Amadeus had a very swollen and infected anus, and within a week of switching him to Wellness canned, the swelling, redness, and excess poop in his fur was gone.

All my cats poop a lot less (which is good bc it means less non-digestibles) and when they do, I swear it does not smell AT ALL.

They all look healthier and seem more active and happy. Amadeus has lost 3 pounds and is well on his way to a healthy weight.

Everyone has their favorites with food. The conclusion I have drawn personally for myself is that a high quality wet food diet is best. You can mix wet and dry, just use a high quality dry if you do. Sharky will probably come over in a bit and offer some great advice too.

Litter is pretty touchy too. I know ppl that like the World's Best Cat Litter. I am cheap and use the 9 Lives litter. It may not be the best health wise but it does clump well and it is affordable. When I get in a better place financially I plan to step up to a more natural litter like WBCL (above). I had to skimp on something so that I could provide the best quality food.

Good luck, sorry for being so long winded!

We decided on the new formula of Blue Seal now that it is wheat , soy and animal by product free.

We also decided on WBCL .... we have used someething called Sweet before its like WBCL but in a different format.

Thank you for the reply , I'm glad Im not the only one whos head was spinning.

many cats have difficulty w/grainy foods... takes some trials to tell if yours is one of them.

that said - i feed Royal Canin Special 33 for my indoor cats [Pixel & Java are dry-only cats] & authority lamb & rice wet for the wet eaters [doesn't have fish - one of the few i've found].

outside ferals get authority kibble & 9 lives wet - can't afford better for them, there's too many of them [they get 3 cans of wet each night].

authority is petsmart's brand, & it's quite good for the price. better than some higher priced brands. i like the RC because of the added lysine [Pixel has feline herpes] & when i try improving the dry, Cable gets the runs. just her, no one else. she does fine on the RC, tho.

i use clay clumping litter - tried the WBCL, didn't like it. also, i have littermaid boxes, so need a hard-clumping litter for them - i thought the WBCL didn't do as well in them.
HTH!

For cat litter I use Nature's Miracle. I *really* love it. It clumps well and covers up odors decently. It is also all natural, corn based.

Tip, when I scoop the litter box, I first shake it side to side, then front to back. This loosens any clumps that are against the sides, making them visible and easy to scoop without breaking them apart.

For cat food <heavy sigh> I am currently trying to switch mine to wet food. But the dry that I am feeding them during this process is Natural Balance Green Pea and Duck formula and Blue Select Spa.

Hope this helps.
