Rocko has been a very affectionate cat. But not overly enthused when you call him over or talk to him. He always had a look to him like he didn't understand what you meant. I just assumed his owners maybe didn't talk to him much.

Well, I started to talk to him in spanish....why not? I talk to my other two in French! Oui!

The first time I said " bien Rocko"...he looked at me with total recognition and came running over! How cute is that! So we have started to expand our spanish vocab to make him feel at home.

So far he recognizes hello and kisses (he gives us licks when we say that) and good Rocko and I love you and wanna eat?

I just thought that was the coolest thing! When we adopt cats we always just assume that their previous owners must have spoken to them in the same way we do. Never dawned on me that maybe they spoke a different language.

Very cute! But isn't "bien" French? Don't you mean "bueno"?

That's sooooo amazing. I've read an article about pets raised by non-English speaking owners - that maybe the reason your pet does not seem to listen/understand you, also acts strange??? I was skeptical on that but now it makes sense

I don't know about French, but I do know Spanish. Bien is an adverb and bueno is an adjective and bueno would be the correct adjective in front of Rocko's name.

I really want this to sound friendly. Hope it does.

If the cat came running, maybe he thought they said "ven aqui" - come here... (Is that correct, Rosemary? My Spanish is VERY rusty!)

I would say, ¡Ven acá! But Butzie could care less if it were aquÃ:censor: or acá.

I love to speak other languages and I try to practice my Spanish all the time.

Muchas gracias, Señora AddieBee,

RosamarÃ:censor:a

When my family lived in Puerto Rico we used to speak Spanish to our pets when they were naughty and english when they were good. When we brought our dog back over the the UK my grandparents found it really difficult and were the talk of our little villiage when they told our dog off at the park in Spanish!!

No offense taken regarding my misuse of the spanish language.
I am certianly not a student of the language but I have picked up a few words here and there...just not the correct usage huh?

He is so adorable when he reacts to my speaking spanish...it really is funny. At no other time does he have that look of recognition, he even rubbed against my legs this morning which he never does.

My coworker told me to say 'ven acqui' but he doesn't repsond to that as well as being called a good cat
He is a cat after all!!

Bueno Rocko!

That vision of your grandparents yelling at the dogs in spanish is hilarious!

I think that is so cool. I have worried about something happening to me and no one realizing how much Levi likes to be called Big Boy. When I ask, "Where's my big boy?" he comes running. It makes him so happy, and seems so strange that he would respond so positivly to a silly phrase.

I can totally understand that. Fiona likes it when she is playing with her mice or balls and I call her a "superstar!"
It gets her all riled up.

Ree Ree likes it when I say "Oh, ReeRee!" he gets all squinty eyed and rolls around on the floor.
