As some of you might know, I am heading to grad school in September to continue studying history.

In order to pay for school, I had applied for some research grants. For the first grant I was turned down right away. The second one, I had to wait until the Spring to know if I got it. Turned out I finished 9th out of 28, and they had 7 grants to give

All this year I worked at an office job and saved up all the money I could. I saved more than I spent and exceeded my savings goal by around $3000

I was also offered two jobs at the university as a Teaching and Research Assistant.
Between my savings and the jobs, I would have enough to pay for school. It's a lot of money, but it's what I really want to do, so I didn't mind the sacrifice.

Fast forward to today... I get an email from the government agency that turned me down for that second grant. As it turned out, two people did not take the grants that they were offered, and they suddenly had a grant to give me!

That grant alone can pay for most, if not all of my living and school expenses. Add to that my two job and I might end up leaving grad school with more money than when I started.

Not just that, but I know that studying history is a risky venture. It's a lot of effort for a very uncertain future.
Now, not only will I be living my dream... but I will be getting paid for it
It is such a great feeling

That sounds wonderful! Congrats!

I thought research grants were just that. Money granted to you to do research as part of your education. So I'm assuming the "research grant" money has to go towards research as part of your education process, and not towards your living and school expenses. What kind of reseach are you planning to do?

Congratulations!!

I remember you were really disappointed in not orginally getting that second grant.
Perhaps you now have a bit of breathing room with this unexpected money.
What do you plan on doing with your degree after grad school??
My godson will be starting his 2nd yr of college this fall with a history major but he plans on teaching. His area of interest is the US Civil War. My husband is a WWII buff and I like English history -the Tudor era.

There is actually very little classes to take in grad school. In two years, I will be taking 4 (as an undergrad, I took 10-12 per year) so most of the time is actually spent on research.
In itself, the research wont cost me much at all, but what the government is saying by giving me this grant is that they will pay me as a researcher. So it's more like they have hired me as a paid researcher.

I will be doing oral history research, interviewing Cambodian refugees about their lives and their experiences of the Khmer Rouger regime. I am mostly interested to see how religion shapes the way people tell their history and the Khmer Rouge genocide.

Congratulations, that's wonderful news! My lab just got our own research grant recently, so I know how you feel! It's great knowing you have a little bit of monetary security for a little while!

That is wonderful. I felt so bad for you when you did not get it before. That made my day hearing a fellow TCSer has had such good fortune. Congratulations!

Congrats! Marie. That is what our daughter wants to do - to go to grad school next year to get a Ph.D in European history. I will tell her about your good fortune.
