Hey folks,

I've recently been bitten by the custom collar bug and have ordered some for my cats (from themodernpet on etsy).

Now I'm thinking about getting a couple collars for my family's dog, Max. I was wondering if you could help me choose which site to buy from and if any of you have gotten collars from the folks I'm thinking about ordering from...

These are the three sites I'm looking at (if you have others to suggest, please do):

themoddog: http://www.etsy.com/shop.php?user_id=5582173

two hounds design: http://www.2houndsdesign.com/

collar mania: http://www.collarmania.com/

I would like to get Max an everyday buckle or tag collar...but as he is an outside dog, it will need to be sturdy and washable.

I also want to get him a fancier martingale collar for when we take him on walks and go to the vet, etc...but he is a big dog (90lbs) so the collar will need to be very strong and I'm not sure whether to go with a 1.5" or 2"... Since he is a boxer/lab mix he doesn't have a very long neck.

Any advice you can give would be great!

Thanks!

I really like the Mod Dog collars in that link you posted. I only use leather collars for my dogs so I purchased a custom collar from Paco Collars (www.pacocollars.com) which are all leather. I am very happy with the collar. I also have a personalized berber fleece collar for one of my dogs with her name on it. I think those are the only two custom collars I have, but I have about 50 collars so I could be wrong.

For your dog's martingale I would say go with the 1.5" because with that mix of breeds if you get a 2" collar it will most likely look weird with his neck length (a no-neck look.)

This is the collar that my Golden wears when at home, it is totally washable and comfortable and very sturdy:

There is also an older version of the collar which can be attached to a leash, we have a few of these ones as well but I prefer the newer version. Here's a link:

That's where I got Oliver's custom collar and I love it.

I have a black lab too, but we got her collar down the shore in North Carolina cuz it has blue crabs on it (her interaction with one such crab got her a spot on Funniest Home Videos and Country Fried Videos)... that one is like leather and the thick woven material.

I was going to suggest a place that was recommended to me awhile ago that I planned to get a collar from soon, but their orders are closed while they revamp their site and ordering system. The Ragtime martingale collars are proving very tempting to me, though.. I knew I should never have peeked in a thread about collars!
I like that they aren't all super-wide.

Thanks for your replies!
Nekochan- I love those spiked/studded leather collars! Unfortunately, my budget isn't that big this time around....and my dog doesn't need any help in looking more intemidating
Although, the grey face/paws make him less scarey lol.

I am definately thinking about getting a ragtime collar for his everyday/buckle collar...He has a tendency (because he's outside) to loose his tags and them being able to sew his name / phone number on the collar is a big plus... I just wish that they had a wider selection of hardware (i.e. metal buckles, etc.) and came in larger widths.

That said, now I can't figure out which fabric to get. I know this sounds very dim, but I've been to their site before and had "ruled them out" because I thought there was only the first page of "fun fabrics"...Guess I didn't notice the "next" paw at the bottom of the page

I'm looking for a more geometric / modern fabric and would appreciate any opinions. He's a black dog so pretty much anything would go. I kind of like the teal paisley and the green/teal dots. I also like the various polka-dot pattersn... While I'm there I might just have to get a new cat collar or two as well

A question for those of you that have the ragtime collars... How well do they wash? Because our dog is outside, I will probably need to wash the collar every month or so to keep it from looking horribly grungy.

Thanks!

Well, apparently, collars are my weakness, lol. I did order the collar from ragtime, but I ended up ordering a plain buckle collar in the green paisley for my dog and two cat collars (the blue swirls and the cat/mouse/yarn print). I got all three with our home phone number and the dog's collar has his name on it.

I can't wait to see what they all look like!

i don't know how well they wash, since i only have cats & have never needed to wash them. but they're mostly cotton, so should do just fine.

For the Ragtime collars:
She is a VERY nice woman so if you're wondering about tweeking her general designs, shoot her an email - she's very accommodating and will usually do what she can to meet your needs. I wanted a solid royal blue fabric for Ollie's collar and she went and found it for me and even took pics and emailed me to make sure it was what I wanted. I can't promise she'll be able to make exactly what you want, but it's worth sending an email (she's usually pretty quick to respond, but she is a stay at home mom and makes all the collars herself, so she can get busy)

I wash Oliver's collar once a month at bath time - I just hand wash it with his shampoo or some Tide and lightly scrub with a nail brush... it's holding up quite well for several years now.

Oh and FYI I don't personally know this woman... everything I said is based on my email interaction with her lol

Oh and if you go to her picture gallery, Oliver is I believe on the 5th page: orange cat with blue collar sitting at the top of a set of steps inside my house

Edit: nevermind... it looks like she downsized her pic pages.... but I do have pics if anyone's interested

Thanks for the replies!
I emailed her today (after placing my order) and, in addition to specifying what colors and info on each collar, I asked her if she might think about adding metal hardware (side release) and possible non-buckle slide adjust collars to her options. Maybe she'll consider it... Those were some options that other sellers were offering that look quite nice.

In a side note, I got the collar that I ordered from themoddog today (it is a non-safety cat collar). It looks great and the nylon/trim is really heavy duty. I had to get a non-safety collar for my genius boy Niles as he's learned how to pop the safety clasp on his other collar I got him
Maybe after wearing this one for a while he'll give up and I can put a regular safety collar on him again

Buzby- I'd love to see a pic of Oliver in his collar! I'll have to try and get some pics of Frazier and Niles in theirs to post.

They have a number of modern-type designs... The thing is I already have a bunch of cat collars so I don't know if I can justify ordering more!
that's the only 'problem' w/the Ragtime collars - they don't wear out like the Beastie Bands did, so i have no reason to order new ones!

Here's the pic I had submitted and was up on her site for awhile:

His name and my number are embroidered in white but it's like on the other side than what's seen in the pic (which is good, don't wanna plaster my number on the net lol)

The pic is not long after he got the collar several years ago - it is showing a little wear, but it's held up MUCH longer than anything I've ever gotten from a pet store... I'm VERY satisfied and will order from her again.

He also has soft paws that match his collar

i co-ordinate mine, too - Cable has hotpink, Java purple & Firefox green - to go w/their collars!
Pixel & Chip are declawed, so they don't get 'em.

Laureen- I love the collar pattern on java (the calico)! Looks almost like stained glass.

Buzby- That blue really looks good on him (blue is the complementary color to orange, so really makes both colors "pop")

Nekochan- I really wish that I had looked more closely at her offerings... I love most of the patterns she has, plus she's currently got a "buy 2, get 1 free" deal going
Her prices aren't bad either. . . I have also ordered from the modern pet on etsy (they also have a website), their quality is pretty good, but not as good themoddog (now that I got my cat collar in the mail from them).

Yup! Royal blue has officially become "his color" over the years - doesn't hurt that I'm a PSU alum and my favorite color is blue
He has a blue pad-style bed too that's navy/royal blue checker board and he looks awesome on it when he actually uses it lol

that's a paisley pattern, btw - don't think she has it anymore.
originally, i got a pale orange w/butterflies for Java, thinking it would look good w/the orange in her coat, but it basically disappeared on her. so i ordered her current one.
used the orange butterfly one for Firefox while she was growing up, tho! still have it, too [just in case!] as well as all of the beastie bands. beastie bands were Firefox's first collar, because you can cut them to fit.
this shows the orange one [w/Cable]:
& here's one of her in the beastie band:
