As a few of you might remember, I took in a stray a few months ago. His hair has finally grown back in, and he's filled out and looks beautiful now. I took him in for a neuter a few weeks ago, and the vet said that he found a heart murmer and they had to cut away a bunch of infected skin on the bottom of his foot. He's healed fine from the surgeries, but the vet wanted me to bring him back in to check out his heart murmur. I know that Main Coons are prone to cardiomyopathy, and I think that he's at least part Main Coon, so I'm a little worried about him. He pants alot and his breathing seems irregular. I'm so worried that it might be heart disease. What are the symptoms of heart disease, and is there anything that can be done for him if he does have it?? (He's around 5 years old they said) He's also been having diarrhea for a little over a week now, and I'm wondering what might be causing it. He didn't have it when I brought him in a few months ago, and he doesn't go outside so I have no idea what's going on there.
He has a vet appointment this Saturday, but I just want everyone's opinions since I'm a little nervous.
Here's a few pictures of him. Doesn't he look wonderful now??

Maine Coons are unfortunately prone to cardiomyopathy. I lost my first MC to that at age 14. There are some relatively inexpensive drugs on the market that can slow it down, and Monster had a pretty high quality of life right up to the last few days. (He was only diagnosed with it at 12, though it was probably present a lot longer.) Sending good your way.

He is beautiful!!! You have every right to be so proud of what you've done to help him...I hope that by delving into his potential heart problem now....he'll have a long and prosperous life ahead of him. Best of luck.....keep us posted....

PS..I like the clear collar....when my cat needed one...it wasn't a see through..which probably made it harder for him to get around....poor fellow...looked so sad wearing it...but it was for his own good...and his problem cleared up really fast.

Healing hugs for your kitty

Oh he hated that collar
. He was so glad when it finally came off. He's such a goofball now and actually acts more like a dog than a cat.
I'll let you all know what the vet says about his heart on saturday.

Well, I took him into the vet today. He said that his heart murmer isn't really bad yet, but that I have to keep an eye on him and if he starts coughing than he needs to go right in. He does think that he'll need to start medication for his heart sometime in the next few years though.
He also gave me some metronidazole for his diarrhea so hopefully that will clear up in a few days.
All in all though it was a good appointment. I just have to make sure that he doesn't over excert himself and monitor his heart. I'm so relieved.
