I just adopted a cat and I got a different items that she can scratch on but Abbie doesn't use them at all. She likes the side of my bed and my chair. Any ideas how i can get her to use them instead. I rent a room from a friend so Abbie lives in my bedroom with me. She doesn't really spend any time outside of my room alone because the lady that i live with has birds and a young child that Abbie doesn't really like. I got her LOTS of different toys, a window shelf, her own bed, and a few other things to sleep or hide in.

Cats often need to be taught to scratch a post. Watch her like a hawk, and the moment she starts scratching on something inapropriate, tell her "NO" then move her to the scratch post. Kneel on the ground with her and rub your fingers over the post as if you are scratching it. Then praise her when she starts to use it. It's never taken me longer than 3 days to retrain a cat to use a post, but I watch them the entire time until they are trained (a little effort on your part saves you a lot on money on furniture in the long run).

Cats like to stretch out their full body length. If the post is shorter than their body length, it is simply too small. You might look into tall cat condos or cardboard scratchers that either lay on the floor or are at an angle. I just found a thigh high post at Petsmart that has a built in card board scratcher and a comfy bed on top of the perch. My cats absolutely love it.
