**rant about crotchety old lady**

I don't know if this should go in the S.O.S forum, but the crazy witch across the street threatened to kill/get rid of my neighbour's cat. So my neighbour (who we'll call Bob) is an older guy, I'd say he's about 60, and he has an inside/outside cat. Their cat has lived about 17 years by now without anyone (to my knowledge) hurting it or threatening it.

However, when we had our indoor/outdoor cat Flash, she pooped/peed on this lady's lawn and the lady's husband told my dad to make sure Flash didn't go in their yard again. That was twelve years ago, and my dad hasn't talked to him since.

Well this afternoon we cut a tree down and had Bob help us cut the roots. Around noon we saw the animal control vehicle stop at the cat-hater lady's house. I didn't see if they had trapped an animal. Around 3:30 her husband drove off in their truck, squealing the tires, and Bob made a joking remark: "Give 'er!" The lady, for whatever reason, called Bob an a-hole. Bob is a funny, well-liked guy, so I don't know why she freaked out on him.

ANYWAY, the lady told Bob that his cat should stay on our/his side of the street, or else 'he wouldn't see it again.' She later went on to say that they already had animal control at their house to get rid of a baby rabbit and said 'and it's dead now!'

So, in my opinion, her title of disgruntled lady proves true. (A few years ago she went to everyone's house on their side of the street and told them to get rid of their trees so she wouldn't get leaves on her lawn.)

My mom told Bob that if his cat does go missing, he's got two witnesses (my parents). There is no cat bylaw in our city, so basically cats can roam free. I don't understand why she can't just shoo the cat out of her lawn or SPEAK to the cats owner IN A NICE MANNER, instead of killing it/threatening it. And killing a baby rabbit because it was on their lawn? - boy, is she an angry woman.

So, what I came to ask is, can I call the police on her for threatening Bob's cat? Or do I have to wait and see if she does, in fact, kill it? *gulp*

ETA: This probably sounds like a dumb thing to be mad about, but who knows what she'll do if the cat goes in her yard? I really don't know if she would call animal control or physically harm it.

Well since that did happen to me you need to find out what laws your state has concerning the "killing" of domesticated animals. If you do have animal control dept they should be well aware of the laws. I would recommend that Bob gets a picture or pictures taken of his cat immediately and that the cat should also be wearing a collar right away-esp a very distinct looking collar with a bell so the lady cannot say it was a stray and take a picture of the cat with the collar on for more proof.
I would then have Bob contact animal control once he is aware of the laws regarding "killing" and together animal control and him should go to the ladies house and inform her & her spouse what would happen if the cat was found dead.
In WI for instance its a felony with a $10,000 fine (I think) and 2 years prison. Of course it doesn't happen that this is enforced usually the fine and jail time is much less.
Hope this info helps.

Not everyone likes animals.

My advise is that instead of waiting for her to call animal control or put out poison to kill the animal that you and whomever else has pets in the area, to keep them inside so that she can't harm them.

Yeah, but I never thought someone would go as far as threatening a cat, but then again there are people who do worse.

Thanks for the suggestions! (Especially the psychological evaluation - that was a good laugh!

Why should she? It's her lawn and if she wanted a cat on it surely she'd put one there. I love animals, but that doesn't mean I want all the neighbours pets roaming onto my property.

If your friend wants to let the cat out, why not build an enclosure? They can be made fairly cheaply and the cat can be safely outside.

Dogs poisoned in Toronto
That happened in Regina not too long ago, except it was tainted meat.

I understand that, but I'm sure she could've asked him nicely instead of threatening him.

I completely agree -- this woman is not mentally stable. Maybe you and Bob should go to Animal Control and discuss the problem with them, so they will be forewarned that she isn't rational.

I agree! Since she is calling animal control they need to be aware of her threats and her irrational behavior.

Neither would I, but I live in reality (believe it or not!) and I understand that if you have a lawn, animals will invariably use it, and weeds will grow. It's no use freaking out like a demented lawn-Nazi. Wildlife doesn't understand property laws. My god, what does she do to the squirrels and chipmunks? She killed a baby rabbit!! This lady sounds nuts. You have to deal with the everyday annoyances of life in a reasonable manner, and that is certainly not threatening the neighbours and screaming abuse. What a lunatic couple! Shame there aren't bylaws allowing for the removal of them.

I agree! That's horrible she is out there threatening to kill people's animals. I could understand her being upset if there was a law against letting animals roam on other people's property ... but even that doesn't warrant a threat to kill!

I met a lady at the SPCA on Thursday who had lost 2 of her 3 kitties within a week because someone poisoned them

If she did that to my cat I'd go and egg her house!

There's a man who lives in our street and once Mitzi was on his drive. He was standing there with his old friends and showed off to them by yelling, clapping and chasing Mitzi!
Lukily my dad was there and he had a right go at him! Now every time I see this man I give him evils.

I agree with everyone else, you should go to Animal Control first.
