Network (1976)
We've come up with a July theme for our movies, it's, "What do you MEAN you haven't seen this? It's the GREATEST MOVIE OF ALL TIME."
Needless to say Network toped the list. So, I popped this in the DVD player, sat back with my bowl of homemade microwave popcorn, and thought I was in for a nice 1970's classic about the TV industry. What I saw was the best horror movie ever made.
The main theme of Network is showing the down fall of TV into mindless useless crap that provides a fantasy for people to get lost in. Eventually, people will get all of their knowledge from this tube, as Howard Beale describes it. Network predicts the coming reality TV trend that seems ever present today. It also shows how reality TV will distort the news, and basically create an entire generation of TV zombies that have no idea how to interact with other people. It is so spot on, and so chilling I nearly threw up half way though. The worst part about the entire movie is that it's written to be a dark comedy, and almost winks to the audience, "Don't worry. This will never happen. We think you are too smart for this."
Little did they know.
Now I know why people have been telling me this is a must see movie. To me, it isn't simply that I had to see it. I must own this film, lend it to friends, have discussion groups over it, and use it as a teaching tool.
So, TCS friends. Have you seen it? What do you think? I'm putting this in IMO mostly because I want to start a debate. The floor is open.
