So I spent yesterday checking the kittens in two different shelters. Now I haven't spent time with kittens in a long time. Are their coats natural alittle course? Every cat I looked at and held (about 9) had their coat like this. I thought before hand that their coat should be soft and silky, but maybe its a "kitten thing"? or could the kitten just not be very healthy?

probably diet. when i adopted Chip, he was eating SD at his foster home... i was, at that time, feeding Chicken Soup. w/in about 2 weeks, his coat was MUCH softer!
shelters are quite limited in funds, so they feed what they can - donated, least expensive, etc. once you get the kitten home, & are feeding a better diet, i'll bet you'll see a change.

I totally agree. Our kittens were taken in off the streets so you can imagine what their diet was. Now, after 4 months of feeding them good quality food, they are soft and lovely. Of course, there is some natural variation in a cats coat. Conor has always had a bit more wiry hair, whereas Steve and Paddington have that soft, kind of downy hair.

One of my kittens, Piglet she was like a wire brush, until she started eating kitten food & I started brushing her each day. Non of the kittens were very soft except for Tuffy. His hair was baby fine and long and soft, still is.
He is the kind who gets near stuff, and it gets glued to his coat.
Now we get to brush & comb and furminat, oh what fun!
